    DNS Server error

My connection goes down every couple of days with a DNS Server Error. 'The DNS server doesn't exist, or is not responding.'

Is this problem beyond the modem? Is there anything I can do about it or does it have to be fixed by the phone company? Is there a cache I can flush?

    Thanks - rev

What DNS Server(s) are you using now - your ISP's DNS Servers?

You could try switching to Google's DNS Servers or other free ones.

Most likely, the settings were Obtain DNS server address automatically

I'm going to try switching, do I keep 'Obtain IP automatically' and just change the entries for DNS server?

If you are just changing the DNS Servers on your computer, the following process should work:

    https://developers.google.com/speed/...dns/docs/using

You would keep the "Obtain IP address automatically" unless you want to set up a fixed IP address for the computer, which is normally not needed.

Does the error come up after the computer has been sitting idle? If so, have you tried rebooting?

Device manager->Network Adaptor - there is a power management option you should disable.

Are your router and modem on a UPS?

I got in touch with Telmex, they can see all the failures and downtime and they agree that there's nothing I can do locally. I tried the procedure for changing to Google DNS but it didn't work. Telmex will reroute me or send a technician.

If your Telmex connection is actually going down, then there isn't much you can do. If you can't reach their equipment, then changing DNS Servers won't work. You likely don't have much of a choice of ISPs in your location either.

Tracert is a good test to fine out how far you can go.
