The only other possibility that I can think of is that maybe one of the drive ports or controllers failed. You could try connecting the hard drive to a different SATA port and change the BIOS to see what happens.

I already did that earlier, thinking at the time BIOS wasn't seeing it but that didn't help either and it was showing up in BIOS. So, that isn't the problem, unless the controllers onboard are all bad.

Sounds like RMA time then. That should be loads of fun.

Oh it was. Just put in for an RMA and they have changed things a lot since last month. I had to create a new account called a Passport. Had to jump through hoops to get it done and at the end it said, 3 to 7 days to even hear from them.
Now I have to inform my brother on what's going on. And they are without a computer except for her tablet.
I told them when I built this computer for them, to buy a UPC but would, they nope.
What's weird is, the SATA ports there are six each labeled as 0, 1, 2, 3. Then close to the ATX power connection there are 4, and 5.
I had the harddrive plugged into port 0 but booting the computer it shows hdd installed in port 2 as slave, I couldn't get it to see port 0.
whatever they did to fix this same mobo before, they screwed it up.
I built this computer back in October 2016.

Mislabeled ports is my bet.

Probably right. I had this board to them (gigabyte) a few months before I used it to build this computer because there was a port missing the little plastic piece that goes over the connection. They supposedly fixed it but when I got it back, the LAN port didn't work, so I had to install a new NIC.

Since I may not hear back from Gigabyte until next week, I was wondering Train did you still use MSI motherboards and if so, what are your thoughts on this one:

From the reviews on Newegg it looks like you should be able to get it to work OK, although you may want to print the reviews pages to .pdf files to save time during setup. There are some quirks if using Windows 10.

Thanks jdc, They have Windows 7 the 32bit version. On her old computer, when Microsoft did their thing and duped people into installing Windows 10, she didn't like it and asked me to remove it. I did.

And I'd rather do a Gigabyte board. Will look today and see what boards are available. I don't want to spend a lot on new mobo for their computer as when I gave it to them, it almost free.

The first link is the same motherboard that's kaput.
And the Asus is more than I planned on spending.

I haven't used one of those in years after a problem with their caps blowing. But I see the caps are solid state now.

The capacitors on most newer motherboards should be OK, especially the solid ones.
