    External monitor to laptop

I have the Dell xps 13 laptop and am trying to connect the monitor I used on my pc to my Dell laptop. I purchased the Cable Matters usb-c multiport adapter with ethernet model 201014. I connected the cable matters adapter to the laptop but I don't think it recognized it. I went to www.cablematters.com/downloads to download a driver for it but, I only see a driver for mac os for that model. How can I get my laptop to recognize this adapter?

What do you mean you don't think it recognized it? Did you look in Device Manager?

Did you try setting up the dual monitors or not? It won't switch automatically.

I wasn't aware that I had to set up for dual monitors. What should I be looking for in usb controllers of device manager to see if it recognized my type-c adpater?

I don't have that adapter, so I can't say exactly what will be detected in Device Manager. There may be separate entries for the video, ethernet, etc, in addition to something listed under USB.

Did you look at Cable Matters support?

I have an Ultra hdmi cable that I never used. Would this brand be fine to connect to my monitor or should I buy a better brand?

Also, after I connected my monitor to the cable matters adapter and went into device manager, my monitor is listed under audio inputs and outputs. How come it is not listed under monitors?

    F8 shows a monitor.
Fn + F6 on the xps13 is "Play next track/chapter"

Fn + F10 are the keys one needs to press in order to toggle the keyboard back light.

    For your future reference Terry:
    XPS13 F Keys

    Fn+F1 Mute Audio
    Fn+F2 Decrease Volume
    Fn+F3 Increase Volume
    Fn+F4 Play previous track/chapter
    Fn+F5 Play/Pause
    Fn+F6 Play next track/chapter
    Fn+F7 nada
    Fn+F8 Switch to external Display
    Fn+F9 Open search charm
    Fn+F10 Toggle keyboard backlight
    Fn+F11 Decrease Brightness
    Fn+F12 Increase Brightness
    Fn+esc Toggle Fn Key Lock
    Fn+PrtScr Turn Off/On Wireless

Might want to print those out.

Why don't you just try the HDMI cable first?

Again, since I don't have the adapter, I can't say what is "normal". Maybe that's just how that particular adapter works. Did you try setting up the dual monitors yet?

I am back. I had to run an errand. Now I see 2 listings in device manager/monitor that both say "generic PnP monitor." What would be the best option (selecting pc screen only option)? Is the first step in setting up the dual monitors "clicking windows key + P? When I click on pc screen only option, nothing seems to really happen.

Somehow I configured it and now I am using my external monitor. How do I toggle back and forth between the 2 monitors? When I have my laptop opened, it toggles back to monitor on laptop and when I close my laptop, it switches back to external monitor. I suppose I should keep my laptop lid closed?

Hit the monitor key a couple times and see what happens.
Mine can close the tv, same on both, just the tv and a couple more it rotates through.

Train, what monitor key are you referring?

When I would close my lid on laptop and come back a bit later, I would have to hit the power button on laptop and it would boot back up into windws and it would revert to laptop screen by default I suppose. What I have been doing is keeping the lid of my laptop open half way. When I keep it open half way, it remains on the external monitor and it doesn't shut down my computer. All I have to do is hit a key or move my mouse to wake up my monitor using the monitorES program. Is this way fine or is there a more suitable way?

Look at your F8 key, it has a monitor on it.

Fn+F8 should enable your monitor. Does on the laptops I have used anyway, then tap just the F8 key and and you should cycle between both, laptop and just the monitor. Learned that when the Toshiba E45W had a broken screen. Yes, sometimes we have to just experiment!
I sure did not feel like totally dismantling the laptop to get the hdd out in order to back up the data on it.
