Red face Eset Nod32 usage on WinXP machine

Had some bad china made mobo caps take down a motherboard on an XP system I was using. Since I am in Florida for the winter, I can't replace the bad caps till I get back to Michigan, so I installed a fresh XP Pro on a Dell Dimenision I acquired via my B-I-L who's company was dumping old rigs for newer upgrades. These were wiped clean and tested.

The Dell was about the same specs as the one that croaked, so I expected the same performance in regards to installing my ESET av on it. Only thing is I didnt have the same saved full installer version I had installed on the other (version 5). I prefer the older versions if they still get the definitions sent, plus the box was doing mostly emails and googling and playing my older games I brought with me down here. Namely, Unreal Tournament GOTY Edition.

So I installed the ESET CD from my most recent renewal (newegg deal) and got version 9 installed. It was claimed to be the "latest" version that works with XP. That is not true as I found out - if you got XP SP3 version 10 will install, just they don't do support for that OS (or a little support). Anyways, (getting there) version 9 -sucks- IMO. It keeps shifting out of gamer mode "on" to "standby" before I can even start my game. If I disable the av till next reboot, this works for a while. Then my game gets slower and jittery more & more. Dropping the game from full screen I can see the ESET icon circling trying to DL and update. My old version 5 did not do that if I disabled it. So I disabled the wireless adapter. Again (after a reboot & ESET disabling) the game ran good for about an hour. Then more of the same bad game play. Sounds like overheating of the vid card right? Nope. Same card I had in the bad mobo. It's only when resources get sucked for whenever ESET is trying to do something, it shouldn't be doing, it effects the game. Of course ESET's proggies never let me kill any of the eset services via control panel (no access BS) so that option is out.

Basically, I just want to go to a version that still gets updates but is not this "9". I read at ESET forums version 10 has fixed many of the problems 9 has had, so that's an option. I have that version DL'ed waiting to go if I want. OR, I could could go back (sort of) to version 7 or 8 and see if that is better, Got 7 on a Win7 computer I have with me also, but dont have my game on that one, yet. May not work on 7 - thought I got that XP Mode update for 7 squirreled away.

My question is this - if I install version 7 or 8, do I have to uninstall version 9 first - or just install over it? I am on my 3rd of 3 liscenses, so dont want to get denied where I got to call them up if I go with fresh install.
Or should I just install version 10.

I brought some the ESET cd's I got from the last several deals and most of them just had the micro installer where you get the bulk from the web vs a full installer. Apparently my version 5 was a download I grabbed of the full installer, and is back home on one of my piles of stuff (cd's, pen drives, hard drives), and not here.

So anyone experience similar and got a working solution ?

Yes, for you "old timers' I am that Ghouldini from long ago now - long time no see.

Long time no see is right.
I would use Geek Uninstaller and remove the newer version. then reboot and the try installing the older version.

I have gotten to prefer it over revo uninstaller.
Old version may have what you want http://www.oldversion.com/windows/software/security/

Yeah, got the revo socked away, heard of geek but haven't tried it yet.

Last time I was at OV, their site was hard to get any corect downloads from. Hadn't been updated and DL's were some php or something. Hadn't been by lately but your links took me to what it used to be like (well similar). Obviously a new wbesite incarnation. No reviews from users on most of the security apps.

Grabbed version 5 & 6 (latest) - have 7, 8, 9, 10 & 64bit versions from ESET already. Going to study up on the liscense BS to see about it if I go uninstall 1st. The mobo that went down had 1 liscense of the 3-user ESET, and the Win7 rig has the 2nd. The 3rd went on this Dell, so if I go with fresh install it may think it # 4 and no activate - without calling them up. They had info before about transferring if you removed a liscense from a rig (dead rig or just dumping the AV) but I have to look at that info.

So I could try 10 if I am going to uninstall anyway. I doubt it will help my gaming issue though.

As I get more used to Win7, I may use that as Florida main rig and just have 2nd XP box to run my games here. Back in Mich I got 2 XP rigs (plus my laptops) and have a win98SE with no AV for my games.

Limited space here in FL though for 2 desktop stations. I got the floor in one corner (bedroom). Sucks for long duration computing. 1st winter down here I had living room setup for 2nd computer, but mom don't like her main rooms looking all messy. She has her own station in the kitchen/desk area.
She moved down here 3 years ago and I come down for the winters.

I got 4 Dells from my B-I-L they were going to be scrapped or given away. 2 Dimensions (E521) and 2 Optiplex's (755). I keep the inerds identical. 1 each at both locations, so I can just carry the HD's with me. Got (3) winXP, Win7, & win10 (free upgrade) on the 3 drives. They see the same info no matter which box I plug in so no problems - stay activated.
Modding up the 755's as they are better rigs than the Dimensions. Going to get quad cores 9650's for them. Put in GS8800 for vid cards - cant do dual slotters, and went with Seasonic 500w supplies.

We got cable down here in FL, so grabbing downloads is easy no matter their size. Back in Mich still on dialup.

Talked to Ren recently - still plans on doing something with his site, so he says.
Been fixing computers and playing Euchre online. Haven't spent much time other than drive byes at the help forums now & then.
Surprising I was the last person to post in the Specialist Lounge. The old gang no more ?

We be scattered around. No more is about it.

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 I use it for BETA testing, like that darn thing too. I just switch SSDs. Easy to do.
Did BETA test Win 10 on it and must admit, I used SSD with it. Win 10 run fine on it.

I don't game, but like playing around a limited few Linux distros.
