Why was it a good idea to use startupmonitor in win xp, but not needed in win 10?
I already explained that. Win Vista and higher has UAC. I never used that app on XP either.

If you don't see Realtek, then see if there is Dell Audio in the Control Panel. As I said, my Dell has that instead, and it is also running a Realtek sound card.
Now that we know it's a 9360, you can try uninstalling/reinstalling the Audio drivers.

You will have the native Windows Audio and a second Dell Audio or Realtek or what ever its name is.

I apologize if I may be a bit confused. I don't have a Dell or Realtek when I click the control panel. The only thing I see associated to my audio drivers in control panel is under sounds titled ""speakers/headphones - Realtek audio default device." When I go to sounds, video, and game controllers in device manager, there are 2 listings (Intel display audio and Realtek Audio).
Where is there 2 audio drivers listed?
Should I select the Realtek audio drives in device manager and click uninstall or just click update drivers?

Please read this link again.

You need to click UNINSTALL. Download the audio drivers from the link in post #16.

This may be a dumb question but do I uninstall, reboot, then download/install the audio drivers from that link or uninstall, download/install drivers from link, then reboot?

Download the drivers, uninstall the old audio drivers, install the downloaded drivers, then reboot.

Midknyte, I just uninsalled, downloaded and installed and rebooted. Everything is the same (listings in control panel and device manager are the same) and I can't get any sound from headphones. I will say the audio that I hear coming from my laptop sounds like it is high definition audio The only change I noticed is the audio coming from my laptop sounds like it is high definition audio, where before it didn't sound like it was high definition, but, that is the only change after installing the drivers from the link.

Hmm, that is very strange. Looks like a common issue:
http://en.community.dell.com/support...517/t/19510764
This is for the 9350, but you might want to try it:
http://en.community.dell.com/support...517/t/19994938
Issue 2: On booting the PC without any headphones, the speakers work. However headphones do not work if inserted. On removing the headphones, the speakers then cease to work. However if booting the PC with headphones inserted, the headphones do work. On removing them, the speakers do not work. The headphones do not work if reinserted. Both these scenarios are fixed by rebooting the PC. Confirmed Solution: get Dell tech support to replace the sound daughter board. Solution 2: 1. Update audio drivers to latest (Audio_Driver_37Y88_WN32_6.0.1.7628_A03.EXE) 2. Update BIOS to latest (XPS_9550_1.1.19.exe) 3. Restart. 4. Open the Task Manager, navigate to startup tab. 5. Disable "HD Audio Background Process" and "Waves MAXXaudio Service Application". 6. Enable "Realtek HD Audio Manager" if not already enabled. 7. Restart. Solution 3: Uninstall the current driver (A03) and install the older (A01) driver. [The newest driver is A05]
First test by plugging in the headphones and then rebooting. See if the headphones work after the reboot.
It's odd that you can't find the Realtek HD Audio Manager. It seems unlikely that they would have removed it from the 9360.

Have you tried different headphones or external speakers? Maybe it's a compatibility issue with those particular headphones.
Did you try the other fixes listed?
Solution 2: 1. Update audio drivers to latest (Audio_Driver_37Y88_WN32_6.0.1.7628_A03.EXE) 2. Update BIOS to latest (XPS_9550_1.1.19.exe) 3. Restart. 4. Open the Task Manager, navigate to startup tab. 5. Disable "HD Audio Background Process" and "Waves MAXXaudio Service Application". 6. Enable "Realtek HD Audio Manager" if not already enabled. 7. Restart.

I tried 2 different headphones. One was just a basic pair of earbuds.
In solution 2, I already updated my audio drivers to latest, right? How do I update my bios?

Go to the Dell support page for the XPS13 9360. It has downloads like the BIOS updates.

Midknyte, I was curious as to what Dell said about this issue, so I contacted their tech support yesterday. I spent 3 hours on the phone with them. They ran had me run some tests and then had me install a number of driver updates, which nothing fixed the issue. I still don't receive any sound from headphones. The tech rep asked me if I heard any sound when I plugged and/or unplugged the headphone cable from the headphone jack on laptop. I told him no. He said it appers that the headphone jack was be bad and wanted to set up a prepaid shipping label to return the laptop so they can inspect and exchange the headphone jack with a new one on my laptop. I told him I only have this laptop less than 2 weeks and this issue started from the time I took the laptop out of the box. I told him that I do not want it fixed and that I will be returning it for a refund and that I will place another order for a new one. He said that I can do that, as well. They try and set up a warranty claim on the laptop hoping the customer is not aware or fails to mention the return policy. So, that is the update. I am going to place another order and will wait until I receive it before I return this laptop for a refund, so I will have a system that I can use in the meantime. Hopefully, I don't have this issue with the new laptop. I will keep you posted.
