Uh ok. That's so basic that I (and most of us) assumed that you had plugged the headphones in properly. Even Dell support missed that. Too bad you didn't figure that out before you ordered a second laptop.

I wish I would have realized it sooner, as well. I didn't have to push as hard when I plugged it into my headphone port on my 5-channel speakers. Thanks again for all you do.

I am going to do a factory reset of my laptop before I contact Dell to return it. Midknyte, you posted a link with instructions on how to do a factory reset. Would the steps below do a factory reset, as well?
Type recovery in search box, then, select the options below.
1. recovery options
2 reset this pc, get started
3. remove everything
4. remove files and clean the drive.

Also, what is the difference between a reset this pc option and factory image restore option?

Personally, I would do a factory reset. This wipes out the system to out-of-the-box condition.
You can try Reset this PC, but you'd need to choose to delete your personal files.

Are the steps below that I need to take to do a factory reset?
At the desktop, click the Search the web and Windows box and type "reset".
Select Reset this PC (System Setting).
Under Advanced Startup, select Restart now.
At the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot.
Select Factory Image Restore.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset process. This will take some time and your computer will restart.

Yes, that's how you'd do a factory image restore.

My external monitor (HP w2207h) has built-in speakers. I believe that is why there is a listing in device manager/audio inputs and outputs. Since having connected my external monitor (HP w2207h monitor) to my Dell laptop and when I connect my headphones, the audio now doesn't come from my headphones, it comes from my external monitor. A pop-up window appears titeled "which device did you plug in?" I do choose headphones/headset option, but sound just wants to come from my HP monitor. How can I correct this?
Also, when I connect my headphones and that pop-up windows appears. There is a listing for headphones/headset with a drop-down box which 3 choices (headphones small, headphones medium, headphones large), as well as, external speakers listing with 3 choices (external speakers small, " " mediium, " " large). Why does it ask to choose the size and what difference would it make from choosing small, medium, or large option?

It's because the monitor is connected via HDMI. If you don't want sound to come out of the monitor, you need to set the default as the system speakers.
Go to Control Panel > Sound
Set the Speakers/Headphones as the default
There are different kinds of headphones. small = earbuds, medium = on-ear, large = over-ear
I don't know what earphones you have, so you can just try the different settings and see what works best.

Midkynte, is there a way that I can have sound come from my monitor when no headphones are plugged in and have sound come from my headphones when they are plugged in

Midknyte, just setting the headphones as default did the trick. Audio comes from monitor and then from headphones when I plug them in. Damn Midknyte, you are good. Thanks so much.
