Why are you surprised? Microsoft Office has always been a paid product.
Try LibreOffice.
https://www.libreoffice.org/
Moving to General & Business Software, since this is not an OS issue.

It just now decided to download but gave me a strict warning that it could contain a virus so I hope you know if it was safe.

If you got it from LibreOffice.org it should be OK.
If you don't need lots of formatting capabilities, WordPad should be on your computer already under Accessories.

You didn't tell us if you have 32 or 64-bit Windows. X86_64 would be for 64-bit Windows.
I just clicked on the downloads and I didn't get any virus warnings. What browser are you using? I'm using Firefox ESR.

I'm using Firefox also. I don't know which one I downloaded but it is working. Ay any rate I love it, it has everything but Wi-Fi as my grand daughter and I have that.

Hmm. Maybe it was your antivirus then.
You can also save documents as MS Word docs (.docx) from LibreOffice Writer, in case you need to send them to other people.
