If you have an unused copy of Windows 7 and you really want 10, you can still get a free upgrade:

JDC2000, thanks for that link. I have an OEM version. Does the upgrade include OEM versions of win 7 or 8? I am looking and I can't even find the activation code.

Win 7 OEM is what I had and it updated just fine.
After system showed me it was activated, I pulled the hdd, installed a SSD and did a clean install.
Yes it activated again. 15 second boot ups I like.

Train, did you have to enter the activation code of your win 7 OEM product during the installation of win 10? Where can I find the activation code? There is a sticker on the bottom corner of the back of the dvd sleeve. There is a tiny photo of a key and a long set of numbers next to it. Is that the activation code? What does it look like?

When I overinstalled win 7 with win 10. Win 10 made a activation code and sent it their server. So when I did a clean install, the activation part checked their server, found that it had been activated already and re-activated what I had just installed.

Now where the product key come in.

Say I build a new computer and do not want to install win 7 first. I start the Win 10 install and it will ask for a Product key at this time I will type in the Windows 7 product key and continue the install. That will be the only time ever with that computer and with Win 10 you will ever put a product key in. Other than that one time and that is the only time it will be added, otherwise click next.

Midknyte, I just downloaded O&O Shutup10. Which settings should I click in it to give me the best security?

Also, I had a bunch of files that I didn't save and I lost them all and I had a bunch of tabs open in chrome that I had to re-open every tab because Microsoft closed my browser when Microsoft did the automatic updates on my laptop. Those updates are annoying. So, I guess the best option is set it as metered? Midknyte, I read the link you posted earlier on setting a "metered" connection. I am a bit confused. How do I configure it as a metered connection?

For Shutup10, just choose the Recommended option. Actions > Apply all recommended settings, then reboot.

If you mean setting your WIRELESS to metered, the instructions were already in the links on post #5.

If you're using Wifi, you could set it as a "metered" connection:

Midknyte, I see where it is on that link. It is set at metered now. Thanks. What must I do to install the updates now that I have it set at metered?

As that link says, you can click the Download button in Windows Update

After enabling this option, Windows Update will say “Updates are available. We’ll download the updates as soon as you connect to Wi-Fi, or you can download the updates using your data connection (charges may apply.)” By marking a connection as metered, you’ve tricked Windows into thinking it’s a mobile data connection–for example, you might be tethering your PC to your smartphone. You can click the Download button to download and install updates at your leisure.

Train, thanks for this info " Say I build a new computer and do not want to install win 7 first. I start the Win 10 install and it will ask for a Product key at this time I will type in the Windows 7 product key and continue the install. That will be the only time ever with that computer and with Win 10 you will ever put a product key in. Other than that one time and that is the only time it will be added, otherwise click next. "

If I go that route and never actually install win 7 and just enter the win 7 code during the win 10 install, could I sell win 7 since it was never actually installed or would the buyer have an issue with the code when he would attempt to install it?

Going to have to buy a new disk/download.
Equipment in the computer changed and the hash will not match close enough for to activate.

Changing the hdd or dvd burner will not effect it, but the motherboard may not fly unless you call in. But all new no.

And I figure they have marked the Win 7 key as dead now that you have updated to Win 10.

Have you ever updated that disk when installed, to win 10?
