Windows 10 or windows 7 pro

Midknyte, JDC2000 said in an earlier post "If you need this system to be fully operational at all times, you may also want to adjust the update settings so you don't get updates as soon as they are released. You will need at lease Windows 10 Pro for this. Otherwise, you may find that an update has caused a problem that might prevent you from getting work done." Is there a way to do this in win 10 home?

I, also, read some reviews (can't recall where) that some said win 10 was slow. Anyone find that to be true?

Like I said before, the Group Policy settings for Windows Update are iffy after the Anniversary update (Version 1607). That's what you would have needed the Pro version for. Other than that, I doubt you'll need the other Pro features. Did you read the link I posted in #14?

Again, I already posted other ways to block Windows Update for both Home and Pro. Please look at the link in post #15.

Win10 would probably be slower than Win7 if you did an upgrade on an old computer. I don't think it's that slow on a new computer, but everyone has a different definition of "slow".

If you want a Windows 10 setting to block updates these days, you would need Windows 10 Enterprise, which can be hard to get. Midknyte's link that shows how to set the network connection as metered or how to turn off the Windows Update Service would be the methods to use for Windows 10 Home. Note that when you do finally install Windows Updates manually, you will have to re-check your security and other settings (like default web browser), because Microsoft resets them to the defaults.

MIdknyte, I was just a bit confused especially, since I haven't used win 10 yet. I am not the most computer savvy. It takes me a bit to absorb all this info, so I apologize if I ask the same question twice.

Correct me if I misinterpreted the info regarding metered (which I don't fully grasp yet) is only for wifi connections (eg laptops) and not PCs?

Please look at the link in #15 again. Under Option #4, there is a way to set Ethernet AKA Wired connections as metered. However, that does require some registry tweaking. For Wifi, there is a GUI option.

If you disable the Windows Update service, Defender won't update at all. You'd have to use a third party antivirus like Avast or something in that case.

Again, this is all if you care about blocking Windows Updates. You might not really need to. Sysadmins and techies generally like more control.

I use Avast on my current system. I never used Defender. Is one better to use over the other?

I have a copy of win 7 home premium that I never used. Does Microsoft offer free win 10 upgrade for previous window software users?

There really isn't any way. You'd just have to install it and try to activate it.
