I am deciding between 2 of the Dell XPS 13. A few of the specs of both are below. Which has better and more stable hardware? Midknyte's cpu link on comparing them was a bit confusing to me and which has the better benchmark. Both have 128GB SSD's. I would assume 128GB is large enough for win 10 with room for some storage?

    7th Generation Intel® Core™ i3-7100U (3MB Cache, up to 2.4 GHz) vs. 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7200U (3MB Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)

    4GB LPDDR3 1866MHz vs. 8GB LPDDR3 1866MHz

    13.3 inch FHD AG (1920 x 1080) InfinityEdge display vs. 13.3 inch FHD AG (1920 x 1080) InfinityEdge display

    Both have Intel® HD Graphics

Both have Killer 1535 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1

Both come with Microsoft Office 30 Day Trial and McAfee LiveSafe 12 Month Subscription. I would prefer that it didn't come with any software.

128GB is pretty small to me. I'd get at least a 240-256GB SSD, since it's the only drive in the laptop. 128 would be ok as a boot drive in a desktop, if you have a second drive for data.

The larger SSD is only offered in the higher end model with would be over $1300. It is not offered as an upgrade in the 2 models with the specs that I posted. Are both sets of specs good or is one better than the other?

The i5-7200U has a higher max speed and I'm assuming it's the system with the 8GB RAM, so it would be obviously better. You didn't list any prices.

I'll let the other guys give their opinion on this.

An i3 is too s-l-o-w. As Midknyte stated, 128 GB is awfully tight. You'd probably end up needing another drive (internal or external) to store your stuff fairly soon. 4 GB of RAM would work, but 8 GB is the sweet spot.

i5, 8 GB ram and a external 1 TB drive. Whether a 128 or larger SSD.
i5 looks to be 10 - 20% faster from what I have found.

The price for the i3 is $800 and for the i5 is $1000 on Dell's website. I can't believe that a $800-$1000 laptop would be somewhat slow. And i5 is only 10-20% faster? All this is upsetting and frustrating. I would think that a $1000 laptop should rank up there for being fast but, what do I know.

Between those two choices, definitely get the i5 with 8GB.

Like I said before, the XPS build quality is better, so you're paying for that (eg. metal vs plastic case). The SSD adds to the cost too, but I can't see going back to HDs as boot drives. SSDs are SOOO much faster.

Inspirons aren't bad either, so you should probably price them out if you're worried about cost.

Midknyte, the drawback with the Inspiron is that you can't get a SSD in any of the models.

Train, the Falcons start at $2200. I would never spend that kind of money for something that is going to be outdated in 6 months (that is a bit of an exaggeration but I'm sure you get my point).

I never owned a laptop before. I only had pcs. I never purchased a system right off the shelf. I always built my pcs with the assistance of you great guys on here. I guess I never knew how expensive they could be for what you get.

    Again, how upsetting. <scratches head>

Basically those are gamer laptops and yes they are spendy.
Heck any computer stuff we buy is outdate even before we buy it.

I was just checking the latest AMD motherboards.

The latest PCI SSD is fast.

I understand the reluctance to pay the price for laptops, had to get over myself.

Whichever brand, if you don't want it to be to to far behind the curve, get at least a 2.5 GHz recent version of the i5, 8 GB of RAM, at least 256 GB SSD, (with an extra internal storage spinner if possible), and Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.

I will upgrade to the 256GB PCIe SSD and will get 8GB RAM.

Is the graphics ard and wifi on this laptop good (Intel® HD Graphics and Killer 1535 802.11ac 2x2 WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1)?

What is the difference in speed between the 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7200U (3MB Cache, up to 3.1 GHz) and the 7th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-7Y54 Processor (4M cache, up to 3.2 GHz) to compensate for the extra $200?

Since I never had a touch screen system before, what is the benefit of having that to compensate for the extra $200?

I suppose an Apple laptop in the range of $1000-$1200 range would have inferior specs compared to this Dell?

I already posted the link to CPU-World earlier. You can compare specs there.
    http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/812...e_i5-7Y54.html
    Intel Core i5-7200U advantages
This CPU has higher base frequency than the i5-7Y54 microprocessor.
Support for faster memory with 2133 MHz data rate results in more memory bandwidth, which is quite beneficial to memory bound tasks. Performance improvement in applications, that are not memory-bound, will be much lower than 14%.

    Intel Core i5-7Y54 advantages
The CPU is 70% more energy efficient than the Intel i5-7200U processor.
Unless you're a hardcore gamer, the video is more than enough. You've been running XP all this time, so I'm pretty sure you're not a gamer. The 802.11ac WiFi is fine.

Do you have a smartphone? The touchscreen is like that but bigger. There are features like pinch zoom, etc. It's really up to you if you want to use it or not. It can be handy at times.

I'm not even going to talk about Macs. Apples to oranges.
