She mostly used it to surf the web and play online casino slot games.
Win 10 will do that. Security wise, I would say it is better.

JDC2000, thanks for the reply. So, if one installs programs on their computer, the best OS would be win 7 home or pro instead of win 10?

Train, you think win 10 security is better and JDC2000 thinks it is not so great. I guess like JDC2000 stated, it depends who you ask.

Yes, it does depend on who you ask.

But, 90+% of the time I use linux. But some programs are only written for windows.

If you are using Windows 7, you should go with the Pro version.

As far as the security of Windows 10 goes, it depends on who you want protection from.

If you are looking for protection from hackers, Windows 10 does indeed have some additional features that may be useful, although the best defense is always an educated user who is aware of the types of threats and how to avoid them.

If you are worried about what Microsoft might be doing with whatever data they have transferred from your computer to their systems, that is another story. They have not even provided any really useful details on exactly what information they are collecting or what they are doing with it.

I have been talking about buying a laptop for some time but haven't yet. I want to buy one within the next week. I want to use is as my main computer right now until I get the time to build a new pc. I want to connect it to my router, modem, printer. I will also connect the logitech keyboard and mouse to it that I was using on my main pc. I would like to connect my 22 inch monitor to it, if possible, that I was using with my main pc, also. I think I would like win 7 pro over win 10. I always leave my pc running 24/7 and probably will be leaving my laptop on 24/7, as well. I would like something that has a good track record of lasting quite some time since I don't buy a new computer every couple years. Can someone recommend a good laptop that has good specs and good hardware that will last for some time without spending an arm or leg? I would appreciate recommendations. Thanks.

Does your monitor have a HDMI port? As most new laptops have just that. But a VGA to HDMI adapters are available.

What price range are you thinking of???
And I take it you want Windows 10 for the OS.

Toshiba was my favorite, but they have stopped making a bunch of models, so now I am looking at Dell.

You just may end up buying a USB DVD/CD burner as a lot of laptops do not come with them.

Hi Train. My monitor has hdmi port. I am not sure which Os would be best, but I was leaning towards win 7 pro. I didn't want to buy the top of the line. but was considering maybe $300 - $500 price range. I would think I should be able to get a good laptop with good hardware that has a good track record if lasting a long time since I probably will leave this on 24/7. Any particular models from anyone would be appreciated.

As I never leave any of my computers on, I figured I save enough to feed the wife and I for a month and that includes eating out a couple times.

I suggest looking in the 500 - 800 price range as they do have better CPUs in them. Most of the $300 ones drive me batty as they are so slow.

Unless you customize and are able to get 7 that way, you are stuck with Win 10. And I will be looking at one of these for my next laptop.

Now my daily laptop at home is a Dell Latitude D630 which is about 10 years old that I picked up refurbished a couple years ago, but I run AntiX-16 , a Linux distro, , 4 GB of ram and a 120 GB SSD. Checking around somewhat, refurbished are the only way that I see where you can get Win 7.

Thanks Train. I am not sure if I should buy a new laptop with win 10 or a good dell refurbished with good specs that has win 7 pro on it. Can you or someone else suggest a good reburbished dell laptop with good specs that has win 7 pro on it?

E6420 would probably be my choice. 8 GB of ram is more than plenty. Well for most of us anyway.

But jdc did give a good list.
