    Search Utility

Can anyone recommend a utility that searches for content INSIDE files?

    Thanks - rev

    What kind of files?

Notepad++ can search in files. So can Grepwin.

Word and .txt files. I have a document consisting of many separate Word docs and I want to make sure I haven't written about the same thing twice, so I plan to search a batch of docs for a particular string.

I use Notepad++ for editing anyway, but you can use the Search > Find in Files. Just enter the string and the target folder. It definitely works on .txt and .doc.

Grepwin is specifically made for searches.

Great! Thanks. I looked at Grepwin once and decided it was too complicated for me. 'Search target folder' is perfect.

Ya. Grepwin is a bit trickier. I'm not that great with regular expressions either.

If you have to work with scripts or batch files, then Notepad++ is a must. The "Find in Files" is just a bonus.
