The internal wireless adapter on that laptop is integrated, so it is not replaceable. You could use a USB wireless adapter, but with no USB 3 ports, you would still be speed limited.

What is between the laptop and the router?
What I use, yes USB 2 , when traveling, motels/hotels, and run into slow internet problems.

Have not had to replace the 5 dB antenna with a 9 dB one yet.

I thought it was just like upgrading a ram chip sounds complicated, I don't have any knowledge of antenna or db

Beats what I get.
But then the server on the other end has a lot to do with it.
Downloaded a 649 MB Linux iso from Japan in 7 minutes. I be happy.
Yes, I used a mirror which sure beats 2.5 hours.
This is with just the3 native Broadcom BCM4321 802.11a/b/g/n nic.

Everytime you up the dB by 3, you double the signal power.
My onboard nic has about 2 DB of power, so when I use the USB adapter I have 5 dB which in effect doubles the send and receive signal. That was enough that I never had to do anything else. Bought it in 2008 and real happy that I did.

laptop 10 ft from router.
The easiest thing would be to just connect a Cat5e cable from the router to your laptop. The laptop has a 1Gb NIC.
You didn't say what router make/model you have. It's possible that your router is bottlenecking your overall speed.
We'd also need to know your ISP's connection speeds.

The route may even be latched up.

What plan did you buy from Sky? That's how you know what target speeds you should be getting.
http://www.ispreview.co.uk/index.php...ated-fttc.html
Looks like it's an older 2.4GHz 802.11n router/modem combo. It doesn't even have gigabit ethernet ports.
There is a good chance that the old router/modem is bottlenecking your speeds.
You should try connecting to the router via cable and then test your speeds. If you still get the same number, then it's not a wifi issue.
