Texting from iPad to Android phone.

I have set up my iPad to communicate by text, but it won't make contact with an Android phone.

I found an item about forwarding from an iPad through an iPhone, but am unsure if it will work here because my wife has an iPhone but I don't. She has an iPad also, but doesn't text from it, so maybe I could forward through her iPhone? Her iPhone, however, is not in our wifi zone when I'm texting.

Failing that, is there an app? Duh. Of course there must be an app. Cane someone point me to it/them with recommendations?

Do you mean SMS text messaging? Or more like a chat or instant messaging application?

There are a LOT of different chat/IM applications. Hangouts is built into Android, so that would probably be the easiest. You'd need to install the Hangouts app for iOS on the iPad.

One way around your problem is to send a text through e-mail, although this is a little more trouble since you need to know which cellular carrier the text recipient uses.

    Example:
An e-mail to 1235551234@txt.att.net will be sent to phone number 123-555-1234 on AT&T's cellular network.

Thanks. I'll do some experimenting with what you gave me. Good stuff, and something in there should get the job done.

I use an iPad to text from all the time. Here's my personal 2 cents (much of it may be rehashed from the links above.)

First, if we are talking typical SMS text messaging, that is phone system based messaging (not data based like email, web and the like.) Second, I cannot find anything in my cellular/WiFi iPad that says it supports SMS. The iPhone does have an option in iMessage to send messages as SMS. But this setting is not in an iPad.

That leaves a user with a couple of options if you only want to use iMessage.
    (1) Use the iPad to Apple iMessage to another Apple iMessage device (non SMS) which won't help your iPad to Android issue.
    (2) Or, link the iPad to an iPhone (which can do SMS.) (You do this by setting the connection in your iPad's iMessage to the phone number of your iPhone. Also, make sure the ability to send iMessages as SMS is turned on in the iPhone.) (I'm pretty sure the connection between the iPad and iPhone is NOT via WiFi, so I don't think they have to be close to each other.)

I use my iPad to text with all the time. But the link is made through my iPhone (choice number (2).) Texts show up on both my iPad and my iPhone and they work with Apple or Android users. Your situation is clouded by the fact that apparently the only iPhone you have access to is someone else's. I'm not sure I'd want my texts showing up on someone else's phone or visa versa.

Seems like maybe the best solution is something like Google's Hangouts (mentioned above.) This keeps your texts private and it will work with anyone else using Hangouts. Hangouts also allows video/phone chats. A nice plus...
