You could try starting it in Safe Mode and then do a System Restore to a previous time when it was working.

Post the model number of the laptop.
There has to be a way to get into the BIOS setup, which runs BEFORE it even tries to boot Windows. If you can do that, then there may be a way to resolve the issue. The only other thing you can try in the meantime is to just let it continue to run and MAYBE it will eventually boot, although I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

Microsoft updates are currently a nightmare, no matter which version of Windows you are using, unfortunately. I updated a Vista laptop and that took 5 days to locate the available updates, and another 5 to download and install them.

That's one reason why I don't set Windows Update to automatically install. I prefer to download and install the updates locally. It's also handy when I have to do clean builds.
Autopatcher can download Win8 updates as well.

I am not kidding. I just left it on and checked it periodically each day, and that is how long it took to update, and this isn't even a computer that was eligible for the Windows 10 "upgrade". Microsoft apparently wants me to e-waste it and buy something with Windows 10 preinstalled. There is no reason why updates should take that long. Microsoft could fix this if they wanted to.
