Windows defender does a good job but regular scans with Malwarebytes is definitely recommended. https://www.malwarebytes.org/ and if you want to pay for it and allow it to run in real time it adds another layer of protection as well. Strictly speaking Malwarebytes isn't an antivirus program it looks for and protects against other types of malware than a regular antivirus. You should not have more than one antivirus program installed on your computer. That can and will cause problems.
Still, following safe surfing habits and keeping your programs and operating system updated regularly is paramount in helping keep malware off of your system.
