Blocking Windows Update
I'm really going to have to kill someone over this.
A few months ago Windows update KB3086255 caused havoc as it BLOCKED ALL CD BASED VIDEO GAMES!!! WTF does Microsoft do stuff like this?
At the time the solution was simple, uninstall the update. However, starting 2-6-16 KB3086255 is back with a vengeance. Uninstalling it is only a short term fix as it requires a restart which will reinstall the update! Hence, I must physically disconnect from the internet to prevent it from updating as it restarts.
This fix is extremely temporary as within two hours (literally I timed it) my PC will automatically restart and... reinstall the update!
How do I block KB3086255 from reinstalling? Or block Windows updates from automatically installing altogether as I don't want my PC to restart automatically every two hours?
I'm using Windows 7 Professional.
Please HELP!!!

Go into control panel, choose "view by icons", click Windows updates, click change settings,
change from "install updates automatically" to "check for updates but let me decide whether to download and install them".
Then when you see that particular update shown waiting in Windows Updates right click it and choose "hide update". It won't reappear.
VirtualDr email notices are not working.
Check back regularly for responses.

Dollanganger--
Perhaps redundant but you could also use the GWX Control Panel.

Thanks, I'll try changing the update settings and post back if it solves the problem.
It was set for "Update Every Day 3:00am" which explains the overnight restarts. This nightly restart only became a problem recently.
Is there any way just permanently block just that one troublesome update?

If you re-read fink's post #2, he has the instructions on how to hide the update that is affecting your games:
Note that you should still change the updates setting from automatic to the setting fink listed, otherwise one day your are likely to wake up and find that you now have Windows 10 on your computer whether you want it or not. One of Microsoft's current updates will automatically download it for you (6 GB worth). There is currently a long list of Microsoft "updates" that cause various issues. There has only been one month since August 2014 that did not have at lease one update from Microsoft that caused problems for various groups of users, so the usual practice is to wait at least a week after "patch Tuesday" to see if there were any issues found by others before installing updates. You don't want to be an unpaid beta tester for Microsoft.

There is no one key or setting, we have to go all the way with the steps and even I use Welchjim's [post #4] tool he linked to to boot.
As it now puts
To block the upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update, specify the following registry value:
Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1 nin the regs that MS say
Well best read it

By "hiding" the problematic update will is block it from installing?
Will the dreaded Windows 10 really auto install?
If so I'll change my settings from updating weekly to asking my permission.

[QUOTE]By "hiding" the problematic update will is block it from installing?
It will prevent Windows Update from installing it automatically. You could theoretically install it manually.
Will the dreaded Windows 10 really auto install?
Not auto install, but auto download. Like jdc2000 mentioned, it would be 6+GB.
If so I'll change my settings from updating weekly to asking my permission.
I'd choose "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them", NOT "Install updates automatically".
