Ok .. managed to get the right info under regedit - [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    "StartMenuLogoff"

and change the value to 1

and now can log off log in to my two users BUT it is a four step process .. I am now looking to have put back in the start key log off and log into the other user under a two step process...

    advice ??

    thanks

so it appears what I am missing is the first screen that usually pops up with the users on the opening for you to pick and choose.. right now whe nI reboot the PC ( see signature) the xp windows just defaults to one user only .. there has to be a quick easy check ox to fix this.. is it in services.msc? I have 85 check on .. may I should check them all on .. or is it in the registry again?

From the screen capture you posted, it looks like you have set the screen saver to require a login password after inactivity.

If there are multiple user accounts on this computer, then the other account(s) may be disabled. If it is set up to log in to a domain, then you won't get a list of users - you have to know the domain and user name you want to use.

More information on exactly how this was originally set up and what you did to the system just before the problem started would be useful.

could you elaborate a bit more on what you say - If it is set up to log in to a domain, then you won't get a list of users - you have to know the domain and user name you want to use.

Switching users employed on a computer with more than one user account. If I switch to a different user, leaving the other user still logged on and then when you logoff you get warned about this.
If that user had files open, changes that were made but not saved will be lost, if you continue with the shutdown. Switch back to that user and save any open documents before shutting down.
Another way of avoiding this message is to logoff rather than switch user.

    I can't log off only switch .. ?

OK, I am still confused. Are you saying that when you click on the Switch User button, it returns you to the third image in your previous post - a lock screen?

If that is the case, what happens when you enter the password requested to unlock the computer? Does that not get you back into your desktop for that user account?

If you just want to log in without a password, the links below might be useful:

haven't checked the links yet ( just got in) .. but no I have no password so just clicking on okay after I have typed in the name gets me to another screen ( after the log out) gets me to another screen that I have to again type in the name and enter again .. So no password log out of previous screen then enter to log in to new screen ( my wife's name or my name depends on whereI am coming from ) The WELCOME page usually has two icons ( or three or four if I have more names to log in).. that welcome page then logs you in without typing in names )

I am missing the WELCOME page .......

If you shut down and power off the computer (not Sleep or Hibernate), then power it back up, what happens? Are you saying that it boots up with your user account already logged in and showing the Lock screen?
