Need advice about some hidden cams

    Hi,

I've been thinking of installing kind of CCTV inside my workplace, so that I can monitor my workers, and it's better if they don't know about this. After searching for a while, I found a campaign on Kickstarter (not released yet) called Spycup. I think it's good and cool, despite that we should put our iPhone inside this cup if we want to record something. I think it's better if they also put some add-on cameras inside the design which makes us don't have to put our iPhone all the time inside the cup. However it's a cool stuff I think. How do you think about this, guys? Also, is it allowed for me to put these stuffs to record my workers? I appreciate any suggestion. Thanks.

Some questions you might want to think about before installing any cameras to monitor your workers could include the following:

Why do I need to monitor them using hidden cameras?

How would you feel if you found out you were being monitored by a hidden camera while at work?

What might happen when your workers find out you are recording them? (They will eventually.)

The usual rule for most situations is that if you need cameras to monitor your employees, chances are you have the wrong employees. If you are running a diamond exchange or a casino, there might be a need for cameras. For a regular office environment, there probably isn't a need if you have decent employees.

As far as legality goes, you need to check the laws that apply to your jurisdictions. In most cases, if you install cameras in locker rooms, changing rooms, or restrooms, you are headed for big trouble.

I have been thinking about this for a couple of days. jdc2000 covers most of my thoughts and questions.

The only other thought is what I would personally do if I felt cameras were needed. I'd be very, very upfront about it and put them in plain view, along with a small sign next to each camera stating what they are and that they are on. If suspected bad conduct/behavior is the issue for the cameras, visible cameras will stop it. If you use hidden cameras and then deal with bad conduct/behavior, employees will figure out they are being monitored secretly and there could be some unwanted fallout for you. (Like jdc2000 notes. Employees could jump to some very bad conclusions about what and where you are monitoring.)

These kinds of questions come up quite often. Beyond cameras, the monitoring of computers is an issue too. Best thing there is to have employees sign a policy that acknowledges the company owns the computers and anything on them or use of them must conform to the policy rules. And that they can be inspected by the company at any time to ensure the policy is being followed. When employees know they are being monitored during work (which can also include cameras if you wish), they tend to follow the rules much better because everyone knows upfront what is expected.

Putting up hidden cameras without employees notice could also violate employee privacy rights. You can also read this below.

A signed for employee manual, stating what can and can can not be done limitations, with termination for to follow. works wonders.

Before I retired, we could not check our email, and other items that were listed. Termination for the first offence was listed in the manual.

Just remember that manual was checked by lawyers and the state of Washington before implemented.
