Question new toshiba canvio connect 2 gb ext hd dr portable.

I have a new toshiba canvio connect 2 gb ext hd dr portable.

Ii says to connect the drive to the pc and turn on the pc.

Then install the software,, by using windows internet explorer and double click setup .exe,

it shows a window on the instructions,in the box, with a canvio board, set up.exe and warranty pdf, then it says if a newer version is available click continue and install the new software version, then it says high light a bundled software tab and click install to begin installation.

I think i went through a process on a western digital similar to this and it was messy.

I believe before some one told me drag this stuff off other drives, should i do this to this one?

It has a remote access software label on the drive powered by pogo plug? i don't need that either?

    What's your suggestion

Toshiba connect canvio connect backup and share, it says on the package also

I don't really want this software on the pc , will the drive work with out it?

YES. I wouldn't bother installing any included software unless you are absolutely sure you want to use it.

Works fine with out the included garbage.
    !. You can delete.
    2. Make a folder and stuff all the garbage into it.
Out of the way and will not run that way.

Not understanding on my part "that a backup by windows" makes a numerical index maybe 1400 entries or more depending on the drive, then are buried under c/user/owner, documents/ an maybe 3 or 4 more, ten will have only 1 folder when you get there, not what i wanted.

I wanted to see the folders as they are are on the c drive or what ever drive you are backing ip.

So last night, i made a new folder on the ext dr, and started copying and pasting, and worked ok, except when i made a new folder on the ext sr, it put the folders that were already there in that one, so it layered them this way also.

The first backup did a system image, but nothing else.

I had to disconnect from the internet, disable essentials, before it would even run.

I use 2 kinds of programs for backups. Imaging for the entire PC and data only backups for photos, music and such.

I image my PC at least once a month before performing Windows Updates. More than that if I feel I am making a significant change that I might want to regress from (like an antivirus program upgrade.) The imaging programs I regularly use do require the user to "mount" the image to be able to browse it for individual files and folders. But I have never found them painful to use at all.

I perform a data backup EVERY time I make changes to any of my data. I keep at least 3 copies of my data (with one offsite.) The 2 backup programs I use don't require any special manipulations to view, copy or whatever any of the files. The files are stored in a similar file structure as when on the PC (note I say similar, not identical!)

I use portable hard drives exclusively. Optical disks are too small and too slow to read and write from. And, I don't have access to enough speed and bandwidth to consider any cloud storage.

Key thing to keep in mind. If doing backups is not fairly easy, it's likely that they won't be performed...

FWIW, this is not intended to be any kind of a commercial. I make nothing from any of these programs! These are just my choices after testing many different things over time. They have worked for me. I would never recommend anything that I wouldn't trust with my own stuff.

    Imaging

Macrium Reflect (free or paid) (I use the paid which has more options)
    Free http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
    Paid http://www.macrium.com/

    Image for Windows (paid)
    https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/image-for-windows.htm

There are several other imaging programs I have used and liked but these are my favorites. Macrium Free is an excellent choice if your budget is pinched!

    Data Backups

    GoodSync (paid)
    http://www.goodsync.com/

SyncBack (free with limitations or paid) (I use the paid.)

I have been copying and pasting some data onto the ext dr, and it's ok,, but i'm not sure why the folders combine when i make a "new one"?

I just created a new system image, and a repair disc, said they were completed successfully.
The last backup prior to this was successful as well,
It was as should be apparently, my lack of understanding how it is presented, was what bothered me, it wasn't what i expected so i could readily use the drive on another pc. I had a drive crash about 3 years ago but had the backup and repair disc,

Now i gotta do the other 2 again to get the up to date
    thks

I'm not sure if I am following everything you're experiencing...

Which imaging program are you using? The one that came with the drive? Beyond that, what version of Windows are you using?

Not sure why you have to disconnect from the web and disable your AV. You shouldn't have to. I can't remember ever doing that.

I'm not grasping what happened with the file copying but if you have very many files you are backing up in this manner, IMO, it could get quite confusing. I backup several thousand files in my data backups. It would be impossible to know if I have everything in my backups and also not have unwanted duplications if I copied everything manually. I have no choice but to use some kind of program to ensure accuracy.

    Windows backup

The first time i used the drive, essentials kept throwing a "threat detected"

Only drive i have that this ever happened to, the last time i used it no problems

Now i have folders on it i can easily use by copying and pasting
