You can't remove all the icons/tiles but to boot directly to the desktop...

Here's how: Step 1: Right-click on the Windows 8.1 taskbar, then choose Properties. Step 2: Click on the Navigation tab, then under the Start screen section, check the box next to "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start."

Another option is to use something like Classic Shell

Thanks jdc and midknyte. Trying jdc's option first.

If I were going to use Win 8.1 just long enought to get Win 7 installed, the options in the links I posted would probably good enough. If I was going to keep Win 8.1, I would go for Classic Shell though.

The instructions you gave, jdc, worked. And I got my Keytronic keyboard working too.
I'm still in debate about changing the os. I'll keep using it this way for a bit but if things don't get better, it's gone.
One thing that's not as good as my desktop, is the onboard Intel graphics. photos are not as clear, there seems to be some sort of pixel problem where the photos look blotchy. I guess it's as they say in the photography world, laptops weren't made to be photo editors.

Not unless you can up the shared memory in the BIOS. Not many laptops allow you to do that.

What's the make/model? Maybe you can try looking for an updated video driver.
It might be the screen, not the video card. Lower end models won't have the highest pixel density.

Midknyte, it's a Inspiron 15, 3542. It has a 15.6 inch screen.
btw, another question, where are folder options so I can change this single click to double click?

I see one update for Intel video Version 10.18.10.3945,A02:
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/...ivers/advanced
Right-click on the Start button and click Control Panel. Go to Folder Options - General. Change from Single-click to Double-click

Says that file isn't for windows 8.1. Won't install.
And thanks for the clue on how to change double click. Worked fine.

That's strange. Video_Driver_5F8YF_WN_10.18.10.3945_A02.EXE is the file listed for Win8.1.

I thought though it listed it for 8.1 64bit, why it wouldn't install was weird. It said it would self install after the download but I saw no activity that it did install.

Well like I said, it probably has more to do with the pixel density of the screen.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-In....129452.0.html
The 15.6-inch glossy display has a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The brightness of 211 cd/m² is no cause for celebration, but given the price of the notebook, pretty much expected.
