If C drive is less than 500 GB that would work. But I just quit fighting the situation and got 3 TB hdds.
And made darn sure they were USB 3.0.

C: drive capacity is 1T.....but I haven't used used even 1/2 of that. 800 GB free out of 900 GB. IMO 1TB is way too much for my use.

You have used 100 GB, so the 500 GB would do the trick.

Today 10/20, the message from Windows to backup started again. "Insert removable usb or CD/DVD Windows needs to back up". How many times will this message appear and ask to backup? I bought the 500MB ext. drive. I have 345GB free out of 465 GB. It seems that a backup is needed every week.
I reset the schedule to the 1st day of the month.
* exasperating *

I got another message last night to insert a CD/DVD to backup my files. So I did that. I put in the external drive (500mb) I bought (again!) and started backing up. The ext. drive had 345 gb free out of 465 gb capacity.
It's morning and it's still backing up. Something is terribly wrong.
Why does the machine keep telling me to backup every week?
I went to settings and changed the schedule to every month, 1st day.
Should I be having to backup this much this often?

This is one reason why I don't use the Microsoft backup. Like all things Microsoft, they do it their way rather than (or despite) asking the user how they want it done.
Can we assume that you are performing an image backup that can restore the entire partition if the boot drive fails?

Honestly I don't know what I'm doing. I just click the button that says "backup now" and it takes almost a day to backup.
How can I disable it like the above suggested?

To change automatic backups
1.Open Backup and Restore Center by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Backup and Restore Center.
2.Click Change settings.
3.Click Change backup settings, and then follow the steps in the wizard.
Note: If you disable Microsoft's backup, you will need to figure out some other way to backup your files and/or create a system image for restoration in case of a boot drive failure.
