WESTERN DIGITAL 500SU
I have an old WD 500su stand alone Hard Drive for
storage. It is old but works good on my win 7 desktop.
I want to move is to a Win 98se desktop but I have had
it so long I forgot how to set it up.
1. Will it work on Win98se.
2. Can I just plug it in and the computer will recognize
and install it.
3. Do I need a driver for win 98se for it and if so
where can I download it.
4. It a small HD but I want to back up some things
on my old computer.

What is the exact model number of the drive?
You would definitely need to install Win98 drivers, if they even exist.
Another issue would be NTFS. I'm guessing the 500GB drive is formatted with NTFS. Win98 can't read/write to NTFS, so you'd have to reformat it to FAT32.

Is the old drive SATA or IDE? If it's SATA does the old motherboard have SATA ports or only IDE?

What is the make and model of the 98 computer?
The BIOS could have a 32 GB limit and all the rest of the drive will be unusable.
Or the BIOS maybe new enough that you can use 137 GB

A 500GB hard drive is a waste for Windows 98, 98SE and ME. You didn't state what you're planning on using for a motherboard, CPU and GPU but finding drivers for anything today will be next to impossible. While it was standard procedure to use FDISK and floppies years ago looking back it was a big pain having to deal with that stuff. Last Spring I finally upgraded the Windows 2000 PC in my vintage computer museum to XP just because of the drivers issue. If you really have a need to run 98SE I'd use it in a virtualbox setup inside a Win 7 install. It also appears there aren't any SATA drivers for 98 to be found unless you know of custom modded ones. https://www.google.com/search?q=virt...ddress&ie=&oe=

I have 2 win 98 desktops. One would not install the hardrive.
The other one opened the stand alone hard drive right away.
I guess I had installed the device on that computer many moons
ago and forgot about that. I must have had a win 98 driver then.
My old desktops and both IDE.

Was that model number a typo? Google can't find a "500SU" drive on Western Digital's website. Can you double-check the model number?
Does this hard drive drive connect to the computer with a USB cable, or internally inside the computer with an IDE cable?

MDL:500B015-RUN is the only other number except the serial #. This a fairly old with capacity of 80gb.
It hooks up by a printer cable to a USB port. My old win 98se found it probably because I had installed
it long ago and moved it to a Win 7 computer. Is is IDE. I would like to know if a win 98 driver is still
available and also under the power button I have 2 small buttons to push but I dd not know what they
are for. I would like to get Western Digital support phone #.
