    Exclamation UPDATED- 26/2 Windows 10 upgrade and nagware/icon ..

We have had a number of threads lately about upgrading to Windows 10. Some wonder whether they should and others just annoyed with the nagware icon that has appeared in their systray even though they may or may not want to upgrade.

    First.. about the upgrade...

VRDR would suggest waiting a period of time before you upgrade your main computer to Windows 10. It's clearly still a work in progress and is what many would call still in beta. If you want to upgrade a VM or a spare computer or laptop then go ahead but no matter what you decide to do before you upgrade be SURE you have made backups of all of your important documents and things like bookmarks and passwords.

Better yet use a disk imaging program like Acronis True Image or a good freebie like Paragon backup, Macrium Reflect or Easeus free backup to make a complete image of your hard drive to be able to revert back in case the upgrade goes badly or you simply don't like Win 10.

Personally I am not currently going to upgrade my Win 7 installs because I see no need but I will wait at least 3-4 months before upgrading my Win 8.1 tablet just to allow some time to see what problems others run into. It might be even worthwhile to wait until there's a 1st service pack or major 1st update before you upgrade.

For those who want to wait but are annoyed by the new icon in your systray bugging you about doing it there are a few ways to get rid of it. All reversible.

    ...Lists most methods that work.

The Windows updates that are directly related to the upgrade/nagware are...

    KB3035583, KB3021917, KB3022345 and KB2952664

They all should be uninstalled and hidden. If later you wish to upgrade you can easily unhide them and reserve your copy of Windows 10.

Optionally some users have found that using Command Prompt to uninstall these KB updates has been more effective.

Open Command Prompt: start>run [type] cmd.exe ... open it. When the black CMD window opens [type] wusa /uninstall /KB:3035583 [enter] changing the KB number for each individual update. Do them one at a time. Note the "space" before each forward slash.
    wusa /uninstall /KB:3035583
    wusa /uninstall /KB:2952664
    wusa /uninstall /KB:3021917
    wusa /uninstall /KB:3022345

Note that you have one full year to decide whether you want to upgrade for free.. that's until end of July 2016 so there's no rush to do anything right now.

Let others deal with the headaches.

http://www.infoworld.com/blog/infoworld-tech-watch is an excellent resource for all things Windows related including troublesome updates to all current OS's and the systray nagware issue.

Also worth noting is that in Windows 10 there is no longer a Media Center and Win 10 auto updates are exactly that.. and mandatory.. you can no longer wait to install them or hide them if they aren't critical to your specific computer. That includes things like hardware drivers that might not need updating and could lead to problems if they are.

    New and important info:

You will have just 1 month to revert or downgrade back to the original 7/8/8.1 if you don't like Windows 10.
