It could be a bad connection to the built-in speakers. Have you tried connecting some headphones to the laptop?

A .pdf file with the specs and port locations can be found at the link below:

What do you see when you go into Control Panel - Sound?

You should see speakers or headset on the Playback tab. Click on the Speakers and then click Properties. Make sure Device Usage says "Use this device (enable)"

HDMI audio would be from your HDMI out port. That shouldn't be your primary audio device.

Boot into the bios and make sure the sound card is enabled. I think you need to press F10 after you power on the laptop. Every bios is different, so you'd just have to search through the menus.

Looks like that's an older model that came with XP/Vista/7 originally, not 8.1.

What are the properties of that High Definition Audio Device? It should be a ADI SoundMAX AD1984A. You didn't say if it's 32 or 64 bit.

You still didn't say if you have 32 or 64 bit Windows. It looks like there are issues with Win8 and the ADI SoundMAX AD1984A.

Did you update the bios? That was one of the suggestions in that support thread.

You could also try installing the Win7 drivers and see if they work.

Windows 8.1 fresh install over windows 7. Format and install on formatted hard drives .Everything on this laptop including office 2013 is working fine just audio ,. Thought at one point today I had it licked by installing realtec audio
For Windows 8 but after the big
Install and and a reboot nothing changed .

It's not a Realtek audio chipset; it's SoundMAX.

You can try the Win7 drivers, but the people on that support thread said they already tried it.

ADI SoundMAX AD1984A Audio Driver for Microsoft Windows 7

You might have to just go back to Win7, if there is no driver support for Win8. Good luck

You've hit the nail on the head.,, that's exactly the problem ,, no window 8 drivers for this device , if I really need the audio put its best to go back to win 7 or even Xp as the win 7 was built in ., I.e. No win 7 disc .

as the win 7 was built in ., I.e. No win 7 disc .
You should have been able to create a recovery disc. That's typical for all manufacturers nowadays.
