    Freezing XP Laptop

    Hi,
I have a 2009 PC laptop running XP. After my most recent bout of updates and scans the device has been freezing a lot, usually when using the internet, but sometimes just after startup. I have to force shut down. Sometimes it starts up again and sometimes it runs a chkdsk. I think my CCleaner deleted something that made my system unstable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have to run a chkdsk scan, I would first try a scan with the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic software. If that passes, and CCleaner really did remove something needed, then you would need to either run System File Checker or perform a Repair Install.

Thanks. I'll update my backups and then try this. Its only speculation on my part at this point that CCleaner was the problem.

Yes, if CCleaners is set wrong, especially the regs part, you can end up doing a clean install.

Reg cleaners are not needed and cause problems.

I tried the microsoft chdsk scan and a free download one, Pass Mark SMART, and both got stuck at a point. 37% of scan 5 of 5 and 90%, respectively.

Did you start chkdsk /f /r from the cmd prompt and let it run overnight. Had to do that more than I can remember over the years.

    Do a hdd diagnostic test.
Seatools for dos is what I use

I doubt CCleaner would do anything to trigger a chkdsk. Sounds more like a bad drive. Run the HD diags like Train said.

I don't know what that first part means, Train, but chkdsk ran for about a day. It spent 8 hours at 37% before I forced shut down. I will try the hdd diag test. Thanks!

Hi, I couldn't get seatools to work but I noticed a overheating issue and downloaded speedfan. Its HDD diag tool gave me this report:

I normally run chkdsk from the command prompt.

    /f

Fixes errors on the disk. The disk must be locked. If chkdsk cannot lock the drive, a message appears that asks you if you want to check the drive the next time you restart the computer.

    /r

Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. The disk must be locked. /r includes the functionality of /f, with the additional analysis of physical disk errors.

    from https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/.../cc730714.aspx

Maxtor is a Seagate brand so Seatools for Windows, or my preferred, Seatools for Dos will check the hdd that is not checked by that hdd diag tool.

    Try under Utilities at
    http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/

If you can not get them, maybe you know someone or place that will download it for you. Put on a thumbdrive or even burn to a cd.
Senior centers, libraries are a couple I have used.
