Video Not Working on One, but OK on Other Laptop

This seems to be a strange occurance. I downloaded a video online some time ago and was working fine on playback, but now only have audio and no video.

This same video plays ok on 2 other laptops, one with o/s Win 7 and one on o/s XP but don't seem to play on my regular laptop with XP

I have tried the playback using both Windows Media Player and also Real Player. The video seems to work ok on both players on the 2 laptops buit only audio on my regular laptop on both players..

Apart from this video, all the other videos that I downloaded or video screen captured and converted to AVI works on my regular laptop.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and any suggestions to get this video working on my regular laptop ? I am curious as to why this happens rather that salvaging the video since I can watch them on the other 2 laptops.

    Many thanks in advance.

The XP must lack the proper codec. WMP and Real Player aren't the greatest. You should try something like VLC instead.

Hi. Thanks for your reply and for the link. I have installed VLC and that video works. Don't understandwhy it don't work with the other 2 players. It was working when I first download it. So can't be a lack of codec when other downlaod video also in the same AVI format works. So still a mystery. But it work on the VLC player. Now need to get to know the new player. Thanks

Which codec do you suspect it's missing, if its a codec probem ?

I wouldn't know unless you found out how the file was encoded. .avi is a wrapper, so the internal video file could be encoded in different ways.

Thanks for the links. I will get round to reading them over this coming weekend. I hope it shows how to find the file is encoded as I am curious to know why all other videos works on Real Player and WMP, but just not this particular video.

Have a similar situation.. downloaded and installed the free LEAWO Blu-ray Player for my windows XP .. The picture ( bluray) is absolutely gorgeous !, on par or better than my subscription for PowerDVD16 playback ..
trouble is the sound is totally garbled and distorted .. Like if you imagine a VU meter 'off the rails' to the right side.. Then I logged out and restarted the same PC with Win10 on another drive and the sound is fine ..
so back to windows XP again .. whether I play back blue ray or standard DVD the sound is distorted ! ..
LEAWO support has not returned any of troubleshooting support , so I am on my own .. I feel it is a codex problem .. But why with Youtube MSN videos the sound is fine.. and my powerdvd16 is also fine with playback for std and BD discs ..?

    Possibly useful link:

Note: If you have PowerDVD and it is working, I'm not sure why you would need Leawo. You could try VLC also.

I do have powerdvd 16 and is working fine on all windows formats ., but tried out the free software from Leawo because I have never to this date found free software to play back Blueray. ( so far this is almost true)
thanks for the links but almost all the links are directed from Leawo troubleshoot are to distorted picture and sound I only have the sound issue and only in windows xp .. the picture is drop dead georgeous,, but the sound makes everything unwatchable unless muted ..

I would try VLC just to see what happens. If you get the same issue, maybe they might be a little more responsive if you ask them about it.

Had to uninstall XP-Codec-Pack-2.5.9 .. and also go back on restore to dater before becasue these codec caused my powerdvd 16 to stop working on windows XP .. got a response back from Leawo who suggested my audio drivers need update .. Funny thing is the audio works fine in all other areas( winsows media player /VLC/ powerdvd16 etc . plus in windows 10 using the same audio card on MB - Leawo works fine in the audio dept .. But not back in in windows xp .,

I just wish Leawo would come out and say that their player is not compatible with windows XP..
instead of saying my drivers need update ..

I'd say that at this point in time it's a lot more likely that new programs are not compatible with XP than are compatible. I doubt many software developers are particularly concerned with XP this far past it's end of life.

VirtualDr email notices are not working.
    Check back regularly for responses.
