lost ability for sleep mode for my hp pavillion dv7
last week after an over night update i was instructed to restart the pc .. well it never started up properly ... so I fully formatted the laptop with my windows 8.1 and noticed after I reinstalled all my usual devices etc I did not have sleep mode - only had : do nothing / hibernate / shut down ..
I have always over the years been able to close the lid, see that the HP symbol goes out.. then the laptop can still charge my cell phone and if I open lid the laptop comes back to life and the I can hear the hardrive spinning to back to life .. now when I close the lid it shuts off completely I am currently useing hibernate .. If I choose nothing the pc is still running as if lid is up - I need that sleep feature back .. I have gone in and disabled the fast start up which didn't help .. and I have been using windows 8.1 for well over a year and so don't think that is the issue ..
how and where can I turn on sleep... ??
thanks

Can you check your graphic driver please in the device manager, if it's VGA standard, install the right one for your card (nvidia, ati, intel) A lot of folks forget to update or install the correct drivers.

Let's take a look at your computer's available sleep states:
- From the Windows 8.x Start (Metro/Tiles) screen, type:
cmd
and press the [Enter] key.
- At the cmd prompt, type:
powercfg -a>0¬epad 0
and press the [Enter] key.
- In the Notepad window that pops up, press [Ctrl][A] (to highlioght everything), then press [Ctrl][C] (to copy it into memory on your computer).
- Now start a Reply to this Thread, click once in the Reply window then press [Ctrl][V] (to paste in what you copied to memory).

I can no longer see this type scenario in my device manager ... even though I know I had radeon drivers before .. and I know I could use sleep before .. I really don't want to format and reinstall windows again in case it fails to install again .. do you think this is a windows 8 problem? rather than an HP problem ..?

If I were betting on a cause, odds are Windows 8 would be it.

like i said .. I installed windows 8.1 - 14 months ago this is a new situation in the past 5 days .. but yeah you might be right .. don't want to loose too much good looks over this.. so took the laptop to my local PC shop and innocently said at the counter 'Please enable sleep mode' and left .. if they fix will find our what they did and report back ....
