    PNY XLR8 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz (PC3 12800) CAS CL9 Desktop Memory

I am still considering on building a new computer. I have not purchased memory for a number of years and am not sure what is out there and which is very good quality. My friend has several sticks of PNY XLR8 8GB DDR3 1600Mhz (PC3 12800) CAS CL9 Desktop Memory model MD8192SD3-1600-X9. If I do build one, it would have windows 7 home premium on it. I am not really a huge gamer but, I want to make sure I have more than enough memory on the system that I may need in the future. Is this PNY XLR8 memory really good quality or is there a better brand/quality that would be a better choice than this? The link below is for specs info only.

Best figure out what motherboard you are going to get first. As that ram just may not work in it.

To use more than 4 GB of ram you will need the 64 bit version of Win 7.

Train, that's for the reply. I wasn't aware that win 7 64-bit is required to use more than 4GB of memory. Thanks for the help.

I just checked the specs on the windows 7 home premium OEM version OS that I have and it says it is a 64-bit version. I had purchased that a few months ago because I found a good deal on it but haven't installed it yet. So I could use this memory depending on whether the MB that I select is compatible with it. If my MB can use it, is this a good memory stick or is there something better/more reliable that would be a better choice?

Yes, 32 bit does have a 4 GB upper limit. Don't need to make costly mistakes.

What I know about pny memory. It worked great in my Mac, not so good in the pc. I'd suggest something other than pny memory.

Photolady, thank you for that feedback. I will take that suggestion and not go with PNY. I want try and purchase good brand/model hardware components that will provide me with the least amount of issues down the road. I had built my current system from hardware that was all recommended on here a number of years ago and have not really had any issues with any of the hardware suggested and am still using this system. I couldn't purchase good quality hardware and build a decent system without the help I receive from all you great guys. Everyone's help they gave me and will continue to give me for my new build is always greatly appreciated. I can't thank you all enough. Sorry if I went off on a tangent.

Derp or anyone else, how good is this G.Skill memory. The link is below. I know I need to know which motherboard I will be using first but my friend is holding a pair of this if I need it. Is each stick of this model memory 8GB each or 16GB each. Why does it say on the stick (8GB x2)?

SpywareDr, I don't really have a budget but I don't want to spend on hardware that just came out and pay top dollar. I will start another thread on new computer build and title it such.

If there is a better memory than the G.Skills that I posted above, please suggest another.

    Each DIMM is 8 GB.
    They are a matched pair.

    G. Skill is good memory. I used it another computer of mine a few years back and never had a problem. For your second question, it's two sticks of 8gb each, giving your 16gb of memory/RAM.

However you still need to know which motherboard and whether it will accept that specific speed.

G.SKILL is still one of the top over clocking [ oc ] brands and seems to be the favorite.
Muskin, OCZ and G.Skill are the favorite oc brands.

The G.SKILL brand is currently popular, with that said,
Unless you intend to use a AMD APU, there is no realistic benefit paying the huge premium for DDR3-2133.

The G.SKILL Ares DDR3-1600 CAS9 16GB can be purchased for as little as $110.00 *with* FREE shipping.
