    Question NSccript addon mozilla

When using NoScript with mozilla, i always before typing into a web page, "usually" have to go to tools/noscript and first disable a page, mark untrusted, , then go to untusted that you disallowed and allow or temporarily allow. Tonight i entered virtual dr in the whitelist and allowed it then when i went to log in, i did not have to use the drop down to disallow or mark untrusted and then go back and allow.

Is this the right way to do this or should you always go through the mark untrusted and then temporarily allow.?

    To keep from being fooled?

I have always used NoScript in its default mode. All scripting is untrusted unless I allow it (temp or permanent.) (There is a very limited default trusted list created by NoScript's author that I pretty much leave alone.)

If I am understanding you correctly, your NoScript is first, by default, allowing all scripting. If so, it's not protecting you very well. The protection comes from initially denying all scripting, and then, one by one, allowing the trustworthy exceptions.

I've gone through the various tabs in options in no script, untrusted, trusted, white list etc, not sure what to change. Some web sites with passwords, i have to temporarily allow for sites ro work. Today after flash update i had an h of a time getting it to work, finally disabled it. There are a fair amount of boxes to check or uncheck,m ones that i do not really understand.

If i go to a web site with video, i usually have to temporarily allow????????????

right now with IE i have to use custom and allow scripting according to the IE message, i don't use it

I make no representation that I am a NoScript (NS) expert. I have used it for several years with no complaints. I think it's a great tool! That said, for the most part I have used it as I originally downloaded and ran it. About the only option I changed was the to untick "Show message about blocked scripts".

My impression is that most users do not change many of the settings. The NS GUI is detailed enough that it could get pretty confusing if you are trying to tweak everything. And to make matters worse, if one is not totally sure what every option really does, it could end up making things less safe.

The main thrust of NS is that, in general, scripting should NOT be trusted. Only websites that a user feels are safe should be allowed to run scripting. (And that does mean "feel"... Most of us cannot 100% predict a website is always safe to run scripts.) Mr. Maone, the maker of NS, has the default options tweaked for best for most users. I place myself in that category and believe most users would be there too. For this reason, I believe that if you have changed options, or are thinking about doing so, you should reconsider and leave things pretty much as delivered.

My recommendation for you is to reset your copy of NS and start over. I am convinced this will be a big help for your use of it. To reset, you open the NS Options box and the reset button is on the bottom. This will set it back to the way it was when you first started with it.

Once this is done, you should make sure the NS icon is visible on your Firefox toolbar. This will allow you to have easy access for making your "Allow" decisions. If the "S" button is not visible, you can drag it onto the toolbar by right clicking and using "Customize..." on the tab bar.

One last thing before you are ready to start again... If you don't want the "Scripts currently forbidden" message every time they are, the one lone option change you might make is to open the NS Options box, go to the Notifications tab and untick "Show message about blocked scripts".

Once this is all in place, just start surfing as usual. Then, if you need to allow scripting at a site, hover your cursor over the "S" icon on the toolbar and choose either "Temporarily allow" or "Allow" for the sites in question. NS will remember your "Temporarily allow" choice for that Firefox session and will permanently remember the "Allow" (unless you revoke it in the future.)

Many of us are creatures of habit when it comes to surfing. When I first started using NS, it took me a few days to "train" it (for my permanent "Allow" choices.) But anymore, I hardly need to mess with it.

Also, keep in mind that Mr. Maone has white listed some popular "safe" sites. So that means, going to something like the ever popular google.com won't block any scripts there.

I hope this helps. Starting over and not deep diving into the options should make your user experience with NS MUCH, MUCH better...

    **re: your video question
Flash based video needs scripting. The reason YouTube is an exception with NS is because Mr. Maone has already permanently allowed YouTube to run scripts.

Tks for the extensive detailed message.

I really haven't tweaked anything, as i would not know how. The allow or temporarily allow has some affect on password sies, today vir dr did not require any allow.

A couple days ago i updated flash, did not allow any addons, but there was different use on the web, i for one site "i feel safe on" , disabled NS and when done enabled it.

I will watch for awhile and see what happens and if necessary, do as you suggest.

My activity on the web is only for items i sincerely have an interest in and do not go to idiotic sites, don't need that don't look for trouble, but as SONY and others have experienced who knows.

Do you use the temporarily allow extensively ? There are some items named in there i do not know, as simple as "null"?

    Thanks again

I never look at the list at all. There are sites I have permanently trusted and so far and survived the experience! LOL Virtual Dr is one I permanently "Allow". That said, once Virtual Dr was allowed, there are several other sites that wish to run scripts. I don't allow them.

I do permanently allow a few things. My computer support forums I go to daily, my bank, my web email providers and so forth. But that's mostly it. Most everything else that I "Allow" is temporary. But as I said, I tend to go to mostly the same places. I'm not a wild surfer!

So you add them to the "white list"?

When you "Allow" something, permanent or temporary, it gets added to the Whitelist. But I never, ever look at the list. IMO, that is making use of NS way, way too hard and time consuming. I only use the "S" icon on the toolbar.

If you are dealing/messing with looking at the list, change to just using the icon. You'll cut your time using NS to a fraction of what you are doing now...
