Hmm. I think you've scared everyone away.

Did you try scan for hardware changes in Device Manager?

Why do you need to reconnect the USB drives? It sounds like you are ready to restart, boot from the TI flash drive, and create the image backup on the external USB HD.

"Scared eveyrone away?" LOL That was funny Midknyte. I hope not but I have been known to do that. lol

I put my flash drive and my usb external HDD in a usb port again and went to device manager and right-clicked on disk drives and clicked scan for hardware changes and the only drive showing after the scan is my internal drive. Is that how I scan for hardware changes? I know I must have clicked on all the usb listings when I went to shut down the flash drive and it must have affected the usb plug and play or something. Is there another option without rebooting? I wanted to do my backup in windows to make sure I can do it without problems.

Do you have a USB keyboard? If not, you could just disable and re-enable each USB controller.

You can try following this link. Step 4 shows disabling/re-enabling the USB controller. You could also try one of the other utilities.

That's your call. You'd be using more system resources (Acronis + Windows), so I don't think it would help. Your Windows is already suspect. I'd boot from the flash drive and run the backup from there.

Sorry for the delay. I had to step out to run an errand for a bit.

I am using a usb keyboard and I am using a wireless mouse.

Can I still trying step 4 in your link even though I am using a usb keyboard?

I wanted to put the rescue boot media on a usb 3.0 flash drive instead of the usb 2.0 that I originally did it on too.

I just checked in my device manager and I don't have a usb mass storage device listing in usb controllers. How can I re-enable that?

Putting the TI boot media on a USB 3.0 will boot faster, but it's not that big of a deal. You're just making extra work for yourself. The main thing is to get into TI.

For XP, Step 4 is this:
For Windows XP, all you need to do is right click on the device, select Disable and click Yes to confirm. Right click on the device again, this time select Enable and you’ll notice that Windows will start to re-detect and remount the USB drive.
You don't even see the flash drive listed, so that won't work.

You can try the devcon utility as shown on this link. However, if the drive is not detected at all, it's probably not listed under any of the USB Root hubs.

I clicked on a few usb root hubs in usb controllers in device manager and I don't see a power option to click at top like it states in your link. I clicked on a few of the root hubs and none have power option.

Also, I just noticed that when I clicked on the usb mass storage device entry listed in usb controllers in device manager, under the general tab in the box in the middle it says the following: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)".

Hmm. There are power tabs when I look on my XP VM. Not sure why they wouldn't be on yours.

Do you even have USB 3.0 ports? According to the MB specs, they are only USB 2.0.

Is the USB 3.0 boot drive the only thing holding you back? If so, don't bother. Just boot from the USB 2.0 drive. Remember that there was an option to boot from CD, which is even slower than USB 2.0. Using a USB 3.0 flash drive isn't going to help much, if at all.

You are right. I only have usb 2.0 ports. I forgot about that. See why you are needed Midknyte?

My main concern is that I am afraid I may not be able to get back into windows and wanted to make sure I could do the backup in windows or at least attempt to before I have to reboot.

What must I do? I reboot and press the F12 key and then select what?

Also, I wonder if my Fkeys work during a bootup since I am using a usb keyboard?

The only way to know is to try. You have the boot instructions in post #47.

You can attempt a backup to the external from Windows. If your Windows install is so fragile that it can't handle, it might not copy over anyway. Garbage in, garbage out.

Also, I just noticed that when I clicked on the usb mass storage device entry listed in usb controllers in device manager, under the general tab in the box in the middle it says the following: "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory. (Code 38)".
So did you try Step 4 on that?

I tried step 4 and it just rebooted. I didn't have any problem getting back into windows. So how much faster would it be if rebooted and did the backup vs. doing the backup in windows? I think I may try it in windows.

I am going to try the backup in windows now. I will post back after it has completed. Midknyte, again, I can't think you enough for the help you give me.
