I completed the backup. The size of my c partition is 27GB. How come the size of my backup says it is 18GB?

Also, how do I check the integrity of this backup to make sure it is not corrupt?

If I am reading it correctly, it looks you can only validate the integrity of the backup right before you do a restore? Is there an option to just validate the backup without performing a restore?

The backup is compressed and doesn't include stuff like hibernation or pagefile.

You can validate the backup without running the restore. Please go to the second link in post #27 again.

I rebooted with flash drive in usb port, press F12, selected HDD and then my flash drive to boot into Acronis using the rescue boot media to validate the integrity of my backup and it was successful. Midknyte, you rock.

I still have a few questions. My keyboard and mouse are both usb. I am not sure why my F keys don't work during the bootup nor does my mouse. Luckily, I have a keyboard and mouse that have the PS/2 connectors that I had to connect prior to rebooting so I could use the F12 key and the mouse to navigate my way around Acronis from my rescue boot media. My question why can't I use my F keys on usb keyboard or my usb mouse during a reboot? Is there a setting in my bios that I should have checked to use them during a boot?

See if there is a setting for "legacy" USB devices in the bios and enable it.

Midknyte, sorry it took me a bit to reply back. I was away for a few days. I am so confused which route to take.

I know windows OS is for 1-PC. How does Microsoft keep track that a user only has it installed on one drive instead of 2? I was thinking of restoring this backup I just did that contains my win xp pro so I have it restored when this drive fails but still continue to use my old drive in the meantime. Is that possible?

I know my MB is not the newest and only supports sata II. I did purchase an OEM version of win 7 home premium version and I have a crucial M500 480GB SSD that I was saving to install win 7. I always hated to install a new OS on a new drive where I would loose all of my firefox settings, add-ons, etc. and start from scratch again. Wow, I am confused as to which route to take. Then I read that ssd drives only have a certain number of writes to them? How many less writes does a ssd have over an HDD? I download a lot of videos/tv shows etc to my drive. I guess using a ssd drive would be really be suited for me?

They know when you run the Windows Activation. Your image is already activated. If your current drive is going bad, why keep using it?

where I would loose all of my firefox settings, add-ons
Just copy the FF profile folder to the new system.

Millions of writes per drive. It will take years to use it up. Longer than many hard drives last. SSD and HDs use different technology, so you wouldn't compare writes. Unless you are doing massive amounts of writes (like running an entire company's datacenter), you shouldn't be too concerned. If you really want to research it, google SSD write endurance.

I only say that my current drive may be going bad because I have been using it for a few years and I leave my computer on 24/7.

Does the FF profile contain all changes I made in about:config, as well? Can that same FF profile be copied over to FF on another drive no matter which OS that will be on that new drive?

Midknyte, thank you for that info on write info on SSD's. That is good to know. I read on the internet that to increase the life of a SSD, you should try to minimize writing to the drive as much as possible.

I also read that when you delete a file on a SSD, it is deleted forever and can not be recovered. Is that true, also?

Yes, about:config is included. It doesn't care which OS. I run portable Firefox with the same profile on many different systems.

Yes. There are a lot of guides. Don't ever defrag an SSD. That's a big one.

Yes. The drive does what's called TRIM to clear the sector.

When your operating system deletes a file from an internal solid-state drive, it sends the TRIM command and the drive immediately clears those sectors. This speeds up the process of writing to the sectors in the future and has a side-benefit of making it practically impossible to recover deleted files from an internal solid-state drive.

Midknyte, so when you delete a file on a SSD, it doesn't go to the recycle bin for it to be possibly undeleted before you permanently empty the recycle bin?

What is the name of the FF profile containing all my about:config settings and which folder is it stored so I can save it?

Midknyte, I am a bit confused. I said I read that one should minimize writing to an SSD drive as much as possible but you said that an SSD drive has millions of writes to it and would take years to use it up so why should one minimize writing to an SSD drive?

I am not sure what happened earlier but, my computer shut off in the middle of windows while I was in the middle of downloading and instaling my windows critical updates. I didn't try to boot my computer back up and let my computer turned off for a few hours. When I turned on the power button on my computer, the fans inside my computer turned on and the lights on my MB lite up but then it would just turn off again. It took about 4 attempts with the same result as I just stated before it would eventually boot into windows. Why did it do that?

Files go into the Recycle Bin like normal. When they say deleted, that's when you empty the Recycle Bin.

What is the name of the FF profile containing all my about:config settings and which folder is it stored so I can save it?
Go to Help - Troubleshooting Information. Click on the "Show Folder" button next to Profile Folder. Copy all the files in that folder (or just go up one level and copy the folder itself) For more info, read this:

Just because there are a lot of writes, that doesn't mean you should waste them or do thing that will unnecessarily cause wear. That's basic maintenance.

Hard to say about the power issue. It could be a PSU problem or bad caps on the motherboard or something else. Are you still using the "bad" drive or did you replace it?

You should start making separate threads for your different issues. This thread's title is Acronis Truie Image, so people will assume that's what it is about.

Midknyte, I really appreciate your help. I started another thread on pc shutting down issue. My apologies.

I really think I am going to do a restore that I have done of my drive and install it on a SSD. So, you think I shouldn't have any problems using an SSD with win xp pro if I do a restore using Acronis? Is there anything I need to do or configure in bios before I do a restore using win xp pro to a SSD? My computer is numerous years old.

You don't have to change anything in the bios. Acronis should realign the sectors upon restore, but you can check it afterwards.

I hope you've been taking notes. This is a long thread.

Midknyte, I didn't restore my drive to a SSD yet. I am waiting to see what I find out what could be wrong with my pc before I proceed in restoring it yet. I will let you know what I decide to do. You are the best.
