If you still use older addons, FF 52.9.0 ESR is the last of the 52.x series.
XUL-based addons no longer function in FF57+ (Quantum).

You may also want to try Waterfox, a fork of Firefox 56 (64+ bit only).

38.x ESR version has been retired.
Note that 45.x ESR now has Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) which was DRM that was added to FF38+
To remove EME, do the following:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/enable-drm
Go to Menu - Options - Content
Uncheck "Play DRM Content" box
In the address bar, type about:support and press Enter
Click on the Show Folder button (Opens your Firefox profile folder)
Close Firefox
Delete the gmp-eme-adobe folder in the Firefox profile folder
FF46+ now enforces add-on signing. If you still need to use old, unsigned addons, you can use 45.x ESR:
Enter about:config in the browser's address bar.
Confirm you will be careful if the prompt appears.
Search for xpinstall.signatures.required.
Double-click the preference to set it to false.

Note that Mozilla is changing to their "Electrolysis" addon architecture (AKA e10s), so many addons won't be compatible with FF48.
https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2016...-electrolysis/
You can check if your addons are compatible here:
https://www.arewee10syet.com/
If you are using a lot of old addons, I recommend you switch to the ESR channel for now.

The bad news for Firefox users continues with the fact that the upcoming Firefox 53.0 release won't work on Linux computers powered by processors older than Pentium 4 or AMD Opteron, and 32-bit Mac OS X operating system won't be supported as Firefox is now distributed as a 64-bit only app for macOS Sierra or later.
