    Running SFC

    What ho!

Running XP Pro sp3 and am having a bit of a problem with OE6, although essentially, it is working. It may be an idea to run SFC, but every time I do, I have my own issue.

To run SFC, I am asked to insert the XP installation disk, obviously to check files and replace if necessary. But since my XP disk (with sp3 slipstreamed) is dated from about 2010 or 2011 (don't recall when I slipstreamed it) and since then, have updated XP with various MS updates, surely, SFC will find a lot of discrepancies and suggest replacing with the original files.

If that is the case, then the updated files will be backdated. Am I correct or am I missing something? If I am right, what can I then do to update the back-dated files?

    Thanks

    Rex

Interesting question, now that Microsoft is no longer supporting Win XP.
I suspect you can still use the slipstreamed XP CD and Windows will find the more updated files elsewhere when you run SFC.
However, make a backup first and then if things go wrong you can always restore the files you now have.

Read this reference, which not only shows you another way to perform SFC but also makes the statement
"Windows will keep track of updated system files that are introduced through the "normal" channels, such as Windows Update, Windows Service Pack installation using Update.exe, Hotfixes installed using Hotfix.exe or Update.exe and Operating system upgrades using Winnt32.exe. "

But why not first post the problem with OE and maybe there will be suggestions how to fix it without using SFC?

Good point. the problem is to be found under a thread with the link http://discussions.virtualdr.com/sho...lication-Error.

The strange thing is, other links on the OE page, to different departments or to the shop's home page, all work; 'Unsubscribe' just gives me the message as shown in the attached image on above link.

Had an e-mail from a photo agency yesterday; again, the link to their home page works fine but the links to 'Wants' and 'Newsletter' both give the message and when I click on either OK or Cancel. the result is the same, OE beeps and closes.

Just changed my Google search parameters and found this bit of information, dated 2004 "SFC checks your system files and replaces certain ones if they are corrupt or missing by copying correct versions from either your install CD or some more current source, as is determined by the system version. It will not regress any file to an earlier version and therefore is not a dangerous tool under any circumstances."

It is possible the Unsubscribe link is corrupt and therefore there is nothing you can do to make it work. You do not think those retailers really want you to unsubscribe?

Anything is possible. But it is happening on too many incoming mails.

It's not the end of the world since I could flag them as spam if I could be bothered to check on the web mail-box first. As for does the Unsubscribe link actually work, who could you be so cynical?

Generally, in spam, Unsubscribe link just proves you are there and they sell you email address. That was a given even back 2000.

Without examining the e-mail headers, you have no idea if they are really coming from the firms they say they are from. Spammers send out authentic looking e-mails all the time with unsubscribe links, hoping you will click on them. Once you do, anything is possible, including having malware installed on your computer.

I don't 'unsubscribe' from the stuff that I receive from the US, such as Viagra, stock tips, penile enlargement, Russian girls, deliveries awaiting approval, lottery winnings, gazillion dollars in an African bank awaiting transfer to my account, etc.

But real e-mails from John Lewis (header was genuine) should do what they say on the box, unsubscribe. I do know that the purpose of most unsubscribe is to tell the other computer that I exist, so keep sending junk.

Since this is not a big deal, and OE clicking off is so rare, i don't think it is worth pursuing a fix; nothing else appears to be broken.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions,

    Rex,

When I mentioned examining the e-mail headers, I meant the FULL header that is not normally displayed. You would need to examine the IP address that the e-mail was actually sent from to verify that it belongs to the company that the e-mail says it is from. Spammers now send out e-mails that look exactly like legitimate e-mails. You can't tell the difference without the IP address checking.

OK, didn't realise that. Not too concerned but out of interest, I may just check the validity of the IP address.

Just checked with one of the IP address trackers and this was the result: IP Address Information Tracking ip address:199.7.202.70 San Bruno, California (CA), United States

The address is taken from the message source: X-Originating-IP: [65.20.0.12]
    Authentication-Results: mta1001.bt.mail.ir2.yahoo.com from=em.johnlewis.com; domainkeys=pass (ok); from=em.johnlewis.com; dkim=pass (ok)
    Received: from 127.0.0.1 (EHLO rgin09.bt.ext.cpcloud.co.uk) (65.20.0.12)

    or

    Received: from omp.em.johnlewis.com (omp.em.johnlewis.com. [199.7.202.70])

Don't really know what I'm looking (now there is a surprise!)

You can use the link below to look up IP addresses or domain names:

    http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/index.jsp

www.johnlewis.com and www.johnlewis.co.uk both show 193.35.250.65 as their IP address using tracert. Unless they have contracted out their e-mail advertising services to a U.S. based company, you would not expect to get U.S. based results.

Agreed. But who knows. May be their internet advertising is done by a UK company that is owned by a US company, or hosted in the US.
