Incomplete downloads
First, a little history about the laptop. Until the past few days it had not been used for over 2 years aside from I apparently turned it on in January to renew my free avast license. So everything was horribly out of date.
So I got to work on it, installing SP1 and a bunch of other updates, as well as adding a couple of browsers, chrome & opera (I did try firefox but soon learned the latest release has issues). Everything was running smoothly until the final 6 updates, one of them was updating IE8 to 11. It wouldn't download, hanging on 99% until it decided to change to 'error'. The same thing happened on my browsers, I'd download something and it would hang with one second to go.
After much surfing the net to try and find similar issues and coming up with too many unresolved threads I finally decided to blame the updates and uninstalled them all including SP1. After using ccleaner to clean up the browsers, uninstalling them, cleaning up the registry and reinstalling my browsers, everything was working fine again. Until last night when I decided to do windows updates again minus SP1. Since then I've uninstalled everything as before but the problem still remains, downloads will not finish.
Please help.
Edit to add, it's running win 7 home, 32 bit.

You didn't say if it's 32 or 64 bit.
(I did try firefox but soon learned the latest release has issues).
Not sure what you mean. FF32 is working fine for me. So is FFESR24.8.
The same thing happened on my browsers, I'd download something and it would hang with one second to go.
Do you mean you had problems downloading on a different computer? If that's the case, then it may be a modem/router/dns issue, rather than a laptop problem.
I would download SP1 on a separate computer, copy it to a flash drive, copy SP1 to the laptop and then install SP1 first.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...s.aspx?id=5842
Then you can run Windows Update. Uncheck IE 9/10/11 upgrades for now.
Everything was running smoothly until the final 6 updates, one of them was updating IE8 to 11
Don't install the following updates:
KB 2982791, KB 2970228, KB 2975719, and KB 2975331
http://www.infoworld.com/t/microsoft...2975331-248582
You should install IE11 separately. You'll need to run Windows Update again after installing IE11.

Sorry, I did edit to say it was a 32 bit before you posted but I guess you were already busy typing by then.
What I meant by "my browsers" was chrome and opera, they were both downloading fine until the updates failed. I doubt very much it's a router/modem/dns issue. Last week I was downloading for fun, ubuntu, ultimate boot cd5 etc with no issues (on my vista desktop)
Since OP, I did go ahead and install all the security updates for microsoft.net 4 framework client profile. After rebooting I thought I'd try and download & install PokerStars, I got the following error message.
"PokerstarsInstall.exe
The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail."
So I ran cmd > sxstrace.exe, here's the results
WinSxs Tacing Utility.
Usage: SxsTrace [Options]
Options:
Trace - logfile:Filename [-nostop]
Enabling tracing for sxs.
Tracing log is saved to Filename
If -nostop is specified, will not prompt to stop tracing.
Parse - Logfile:Filename -outfile:ParsedFile [-filter:AppName]
Translate the raw tracefile into a human readable format and save the
result to ParsedFile
Use -filter option to filter the output.
Stop trace
Stop the trace if it is not stopped before.
Example: SxsTrace Trace -logfile:SxsTrace.etl
SxsTrace Parse -logfile:SxsTrace.etl -outfile:SxsTrace.txt
I don't know what any of that means exactly but hopefully it might give a clue to the problem. This 'nostop' does seem to be what's happening with downloaded files, they get to 100% or 0 seconds, then 99% or 1 sec to go, then just hangs until it gives up.
I guess I will now uninstall the latest round of MS updates and attempt your way of downloading sp1 to a flash drive

Try not to go back and edit too much. As you saw, we can miss details.
What I meant by "my browsers" was chrome and opera
So it seems to be an issue with the system, not a specific browser.
Install SP1 first and then see how it goes. You can install IE updates, just don't do the full IE browser upgrades yet. Don't install the 4 updates I mentioned before.
sxstrace is more of an application developer tool. It won't help your download issue. I'm guessing that the installer is trying to download components and that is failing.

Or at least I would download sp1 to a flash drive if I knew which one...

Good and bad news. My download woes still continue but sp1, all initial updates and ie11 are now installed but there appears to be no further updates since installing ie11 as earlier suggested.
Initially a 35mb microsoft.net 4 framework did fail as per last weekend but I can only assume I was given a different error code this time (80200053). A quick search led to a small windows update diagnostic tool which sorted a few things. After running it there were 2 pages of details, 1st page stated it fixed 'problems with installing windows updates' 3 times. It failed to fix 'service registration is missing or corrupt'. The second page had all 4 items fixed. From there installing the final microsoft.net 4 framework and ie11 went smoothly.
Now if I can just get this download problem fixed I might have a laptop worth using...

If Windows Updates downloaded, then maybe you just need to reset IE.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737
If that doesn't work, try resetting your TCPIP.

Nope, neither of those worked. I'm literally getting 99% everytime but then it just hangs with 0-1 second remaining depending on which browser I use. As you say now Windows Updates have downloaded there can't be too much wrong. It's clearly a common problem but finding a fix seems a bit harder. Numerous threads on the net but no real conclusions to be found yet.

Well it appears I've found the problem. Somewhere between Windows Updates and avast there has been a conflict of interest in that final second where avast scans the file. I just disabled both web shield and file shield and completed a download. Not sure which shield is causing the problem I went into avast to enable one of them but avast is now sulking and not responding, sigh.

OK. So it's an Avast problem, not Windows. That's progress.
I'd guess File Shield. You could try uninstalling and reinstalling Avast. Or just switch to a different AV.

Thanks for the uninstall link. I've uninstalled avast and gone with Microsoft Security Essentials for now although I'm not sure how well it'll protect me. I do like the lightweight aspect to it compared to avast which was too much for this laptop. Not only was it interfering with downloads but pages like facebook were having problems opening along with problems with playing youtube clips, ITV catch-up player etc. I've also given Firefox another try and that's now running perfectly. So all in all I'm now one happy customer.
Thanks for the help, much appreciated.

That's good to hear. Had a couple of concerns after reading some reviews but I rarely go off the beaten track when it comes to general surfing so feel pretty safe and everything is running superbly.
