Resolved [RESOLVED] Power is on - No boot activity

My wife's computer. Will not power up. Power supply fan comes on, CPU cooler running on high, DVD's will open and close. No evident CPU or harddrive activity. Not sure if video output is down, but no response to keyboard input.

    Computer Info:
Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2
Intel Core 2Quad CPU 2.33 GHz
    8 GB RAM
    64 bit OS
Hard Drive 581 GB / 200 GB free space

    Gateway LX6810-01

    Any debugging suggestions?

    1. Try a different monitor. Does it work now?

    2. If the different monitor does not work, open case and make sure all connections are secure.

    Try reseating the ram.

If that doesn't work, I'd try swapping the PSU. Those Gateways didn't have the best PSUs. I've had situations where the fans come on, but the PSU isn't giving the correct power to the MB.

    Train,
    Thank you for the reply.

No joy. No evident loose connections, though I'm not sure where all to look. I examined those I could get to.

    Midknyte,
    Thank you too,

I'll have to work on the RAM. Do you have a link to a diagram so I'm yanking on the right items.

Harddrive is spinning up. I'll have to find a spare PSU.

The ram is right in the middle, next to the CPU. 4 x 2GB sticks.

Don't yank. Watch this video from 0:29 to 1:21 to see how to reseat a RAM module.

    (Computer powered Off/Down of course).

    Thanks Doc,
I removed and reseated the memory and some of the PSU leads. No change.

A new symptom that started before doing this is that the PSU won't respond immediatly to the on/off switch. It will turn on about 5 minutes after pluging in and pusjhing the switch.

As Midknyte already suggested way back in post #3, test with another power supply.
    and while you're at it,
Examine the mobo carefully for any defective capacitors as per Trains's comments.
    Cheers.

    SUCCESS,
PSU replaced and everything is working.

Does anyone know how to get the hibernate mode to work. This is a long standing issue even with the old power supply. The fans run constantly and are annoying.

Gave up on hibernate years ago and just shut my computers down. One program running in the background stops hibernate from working.
