    Firefox Profile

    Hi there,

I was using FF2, now using FF20, tried FF29 and at the moment, don't like it, but none of that is related to my question. With FF2, I was running Bookmark Backup and Backup Fox, the path set to a folder on my D:/MyDocs and everything was fine.

Under FF20, with the same add-ons running, I no longer get a bookmark backup automatically and cannot find out why. So I adopt the easiest method of not only a direct copy of my Bookmarks but also a copy of the D&S/Rex/AppData/Mozilla/FF/Profile folder.

That copy has a collection of files and folders. While browsing for a solution to why Bookmark BU does not work, I found a Mozilla page that told me I can copy the profile folder from Help/Trobleshooting Info/Show Folder.

I gave is a try, but when I checked, the only items actually copied were the FF files, not the folders.

My question is, when I have to restore my profile, I currently do so by copying my backup copy to the profile folder. If I don't have folders in the back-up, will a restore actually work?

Sorry if this is not too clear!

    Thanks

    Rex

Note that FF26 and FF29 broke a lot of old addons. If the developer didn't update them, then you'll have to find an alternative.

If this is the Bookmark Backup you are running, then it's super old. I don't even see it on the FF addon site.

BackupFox hasn't been updated since 2011.

    Did you try FEBE instead?

You can also use something like Firefox Sync or Xmarks (v4.3.1) to save your bookmarks.

Bookmarks B.U. is what I am/was using. I don't have an 'incompatible with FF20' message.

Have never gotten to grips with FEBE. In the past when I tried it, I could not restore my profile unsuccessful, so uninstalled it. It's probably me, not the program!

Sync and Xmarks will probably do the job but if/ when I want to restore my browser / bookmarks, because it won't connect to the web, how do I do so if the back-up is on the web?

My current method is not sophisticated but does work in a clunky way. I only posted because I want to understand if the FF profile b/u method, which copies the profile folder but not the folders enclosed within the profile, would restore my profile? My clunky copy/paste method certainly does restore my profile completely.

I don't see a "Bookmarks B.U." on the FF addons page. Do you have a link?

What version of FEBE did you use? Use version 8.0.3 on the link I posted, NOT 7.3.0.1 on the FF addons site.

What do you mean? If you can't connect to the web, you would first repair FF, and then resync your bookmarks. I highly doubt a connection issue would be caused by bookmarks.

How are you copying the profile folder? I don't see why it wouldn't copy the subfolders.

All of the FF versions before 30 have security problems. You must upgrade to v. 30 before you fix anything else. Those add-ons which are still good will update automatically, and many of the others have replacements. The forums for Firefox are www.forums.mozillazine.org, a "must" for any Mozilla user.

Are you closing Firefox before you copy the profile?

With all due respect, I felt compelled to post.

I must agree with foxy. The internet browser is the front line program that is attacked from everything imaginable trying to get in to one's computer and do who knows what to it. IMO, unless one is using virtualization (like Sandboxie, VMWare or something like them) , the browser should not be anything than the latest that the operating system supports. For Firefox, as of July 16, that means either regular version 30.0 or ESR 24.6.0.

Getting back to backup, after you install 30:

I use Karen's Replicator, a user-friendly, intuitive program that just copies the entire profile and several other data folders to a flash drive every night.

About the UI of v. 30--at Mozillazine there are several threads about making the UI look like the older versions. We use Classic Theme Restorer and Classic Toolbar Buttons.
