WANTED: ADVISEMENT ON WIN 8 TO WIN 8.1

I have ordered a laptop that is coming with win 8 . It is rumored that win 8.1 is a far improvement over the former. If so, does one just update it from Microsoft. And if so, would one do it immediately after receiving the laptop or wait till all the unwanted trial vers. of stuff removed [assuming that it would come with a lot of junk} ?
I am just starting to get used to win 7 & now have to work my tired old brain on a new venture.. Any step by step instruction would surely be appreciated. Thanks.....
BTW, is the upgrade free ??

If you just ordered it, chances are it will come with 8.1 already.

Please read the 8.1 update faq

    Yes.

Yes, and do the upgrade. I happen to like Windows 8.1.

I hope that this thread is still active.............I received the new laptop with windows 8. I upgraded to 8.1 & pretty much got a handle on how to get around with same. I got rid of the Norton's trial & installed Avast which I have been using for years. I also installed Firefox & made it my default browser. Been using it for years also. But, I am having lots of problems with 8.1 . When I try to get on line & search for something, I am flooded with popup ads requesting a need to upgrade software, or install this or that. It has become a real nightmare. I don't know what is real or what is fake. I have never had such a problem with Win 7 or even XP. It came with Skype but not the video version. I have tried my best to get the correct version to no avail. Avast keeps blocking all my moves indicating that these popup sites are infectious . It even requested I let it do a scan because it detected red flag items on the laptop. One item it detected was a file called Buzz-it. Which turned out to be a virus. (I haven't the foggiest idea how it got there. I have had "0" virus for years & now seemed to be plagued with the likes of them with a supposedly safer OS. Any suggestions??

Malwarebytes (MBAM) would be a start. You can just install the free version and then run a scan.

If the MBAM detects anything, you might want to create a new thread in the Intensive Care forum.
    Follow the instructions carefully:

What addons do you have in Firefox? Adblock Plus is a must for me. I also use Disconnect, HTTPS Everywhere, and WOT.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have no add-ons in Firefox. None whatsoever. Here is a prime example of what is happening. I went to Skype.com to DL a version for Win 8. I get to the site ok, find what I need & click to DL. Up comes this sites & says: " Http:// says that you need to update your software. Please update in order to continue" . I either have to click ok or close the page. Meanwhile AVAST is blowing it's whistle to make sure I do not make the move. This type of stuff is happening wherever I go, whether it's IE or Firefox. Perhaps I have a buggy OS.?? This is really crazy. Never has this ever happened before... OK on MBAM ..I run it on all my machines. Just have not got around to installing it on this win8 machine...

No, I don't think it's a buggy OS. I have 2 Win8.1 VMs (32 and 64bit) without problems like you described. It sounds more like an infection.

I have no add-ons in Firefox. None whatsoever.
That one of the major reasons to use FF. I'd at least install Adblock Plus and WOT.

I am installing Malware bytes now. It was a real hassle to get the DL. I was plagued with many pop-up sites even tho I had installed all the ad-ons you had listed. I am also plagued with something called "weDownload Manager" Have no idea where it came from... I'm about to run MBAM so will see if it finds anything. For 2 cents, I would return this Laptop & start over....Wonder why a new Machine would have an infection??

If you are already infected, installing the addons wouldn't really help.

I am also plagued with something called "weDownload Manager"
You probably clicked on the wrong link. A lot of sites will try to install a download manager. You want to just download the regular file.

After the scan is done, make a new thread in the ICU forum. Read the instructions on the link I posted earlier.
Make sure to post your MBAM scan logs.

Let them know you are running Win8.1, because I don't think DDS will run on Win8.1
