    Microsoft Backup Version 6.0

    Hi!

I found some old floppy disks with backup files that I now would like to restore. From what I remember I used a program called Microsoft Backup included in Windows 3.1 when I created these files back in 1995. These are the steps I have been taken so far:

    1. Installed MS dos and windows 3.1 in vmware fusion for mac
    2. I copied the files from the floppy disc using an USB floppy drive to my mac OS.
    - The name of the files are CC51210A.001, ..002 and so on.
    - I got error when coping some of the files. I hope I can retrieve some data...
    3. I have been able to copy the files to the windows 3.1 vm.
    - I created an iso and mounted the file in vmware fusion.
    - I was only able to read the iso file when created in windows 8 vm,
not when created in the mac os.
    4. I have launched Microsoft Backup and tried to retrieve the files.
    - I have updated System.ini according to instruction when launching ms-backup.
    - Here we need to select "Backup Set Catalog". This drop down list was total
empty. It seems like that I have forgotten to aslo backup the catalog.
    - In the menu I can select Catalog> Rebuild... When I do this and select the files
I get a dialog where I can select "CC51210A". Looks good but when I press OK
I get the error "The Volume you have inserted contains no component files."
    5. I have also tried to use the restore command in dos on the file
    - I get the error "Source does not contain backup files"

Well, that's my story from the last couple of hours If you have an idea or if you would find it challenging and amusing to troubleshoot this we could perhaps look at it together.

    Thanks!

    Olof

I don't remember a backup app in Win 3.1....but I would assume you'd be prompted to RESTORE and then place the last floppy in so it can get the index files.
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.
