No Windows easy transfer -- best alternative?

I have a friend who is not tech savvy and has an XP desktop, moving to Win 8 in a laptop. He wants to move his files from the old computer to the new one, and I was all set to discuss Windows Easy Transfer with him but it is removed from Win 8. There seem to be myriad programs to do this, but what methods can you suggest for me to go over with him, not being tech savvy? One, of course, is to have it done professionally, but I thought some ideas from you folk might help me talk him through this without that expense. Thanks. We recognize we are not talking about programs, but data files.

Drop them on a flash drive, then upload them to the new computer via drag and drop.

I considered that was most likely the best, but thanks for the clarification.
