    Using Sandboxie

I just downloaded Sandboxie Free to run my Firefox v.28 in. I don't want to join their forum, which would be my umpty-umpteenth. I followed their directions to test by downloading a file from the web, but it downloaded to my usual folder. How do I know it's sandboxed?

Also, I ran this in the run box, following their instructions again, and Window didn't recognize it. I tried removing possible typos on their part, but no cigar:
Sandbox > Run Sandboxed > Run Windows Explorer

I'm the sole user of my computers. What will I NOT BE ALLOWED to do in Sandboxie?

OK, they're not allowing me to drag a web shortcut to my desktop. Grrrrrr

I've started Firefox from a link, and Sandboxie tells me it's not sandboxed. I don't really understand the messages and Help files in this program.

You guessed it. I'm sandboxing because I have to hold onto XP for a while.

I've been running SBIE for close to 2 years or so. I'll try to help but have to offer some caveats.

First, I'm no expert. I've followed setup suggestions I read over time from various sources.
Second, I've always ran the paid version. So if there are any significant differences between paid and free, I won't know them.
Finally, I've never joined SBIE's forum either. I get most of my info from Wilders Security. Just like the feel of the group there. There are many, many SBIE users there and tons of SBIE threads.

When you right click an program executable or program shortcut, is there a "Run Sandboxed" in your system right click context menu? That is the easiest, best way to run programs sandboxed.

To create a permanent shortcut to run a program sandboxed, the format is
    "C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\Start.exe" C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
Just substitute the portion that has Firefox with the path of the program you wish to run. Also, the Start In box should have "C:\Program Files\Sandboxie" in it.

I am confused why you would want to run Windows Explorer sandboxed. It should be a totally, 100% trusted program. Did you mean Internet Explorer?

Sandboxie can place a colored border around a sandboxed program. I chose red. So when I am sandboxed, it's easy to see. (Under settings | appearance)

You note that you don't have the ability to drag and drop from a sandbox. Sorry, but this is one of the prices of sandboxing. (A price I am more than willing to pay for the extra safety.) The clipboard has always worked but other means of bringing stuff out of the sandbox are much tighter.

Good, I know Wilders, used it years ago.

OK, it's there. But I often run Firefox and Opera together on certain sites where I have 2 identities or where FF hides some page elements,
and SB allows only 1 to run at a time. Or am I using it wrong?

(I think) SB told me to do that because I wanted to D/L a file to a specific folder, Downloads, but it's not a sandboxed folder. Are
there sandboxed folders where I can put downloads temporarily, and then bring them out later?

No colored border yet, but the title bar of programs gets two # around titles. This is starting to make some sense. I started FF from your
email reply, so it's not sandboxed. How would I do that?

Sorry about the shortcut not launching FF. I posted my shortcut from 64 bit Windows 7 (a DUH moment!)Try
    "C:\Program Files\Sandboxie\Start.exe" C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe

Free SBIE only allows one sandbox but I thought more than one program can run in it. You've tried the right click "Run Sandboxed" on a second program after one is already running? There is another, but less convenient way to launch something we can try if the right click doesn't work.

Since the concept of a sandbox is to isolate the computer from the web, downloads have prompts to make certain you haven't made a boo boo and really want this stuff. My downloads go to my desktop. I have SBIE configured for "Immediate Recovery" which always asks if I want to recover my stuff and where I want it to go.

Here is a recent review that is pretty decent. You may find it helpful...

I removed the program. I clone my HD weekly (in 16 minutes, ) and it wasn't worth the effort of the learning curve. Thanks for your help.
