    Resolved [RESOLVED] Windows 8.1 irritation

Well, what it is, is the new "Start" keeps crashing. CONSTANTLY, and I can't get into the metro area. I have to keep restarting Windows Explorer to get in. Anyone else have this problem, and if so how did they get round it ?
Happened again, NOW and Ive just gone onto my comp.

Have you checked Event Viewer for any errors?

    Try this:

If you installed Update 1, that might be the problem too.

Nice link, thanks. Yes, it's the update to 8.1 thats certainly caused it but which part ?
Happens maybe half a dozen times during course of day.
Looking at the Event Viewer, even reading the piece, I don't know what I'm looking for

Try uninstalling Update 1 and see if that helps. I don't think there is one single fix-all. There are a lot of threads on the Microsoft Forums. MS even pulled Update 1 from the WSUS corporate updates.

Malwarebytes also has issues with Update 1:

I think Ive sussed the cause.
    TuneUp Utilities 2014.
Its earlier ones just wouldn't work on Win 8 64bit (although they claimed it did. They didn't)
Took TUU 2014 off, and it's never happened since.

Oy. Those utilities seem to hurt more than they help, especially if they do registry cleaning.
