[RESOLVED] Dell Desktop won't recognize mouse or keyboard
An old friend brought me his XP desktop to see if I could put Windows 7 on it. When I hooked it up it would not recognize the mouse or the keyboard. When I looked in Google it said it could be the motherboard or the CPU. Could it possibly be something else since my friend cannot afford to replace the motherboard or the CPU. It is a Dell Optiplex 755 service code 91CVLF1.

So you didn't get as far as installing Win 7 correct?
Guess that you're using your keyboard and mouse?
Are they USB or PS2?
I'm guessing USB - if so you can probably get into the BIOS and look for the Legacy USB option and enable it.
Or get your friend to go get his PS2 devices.
Did you or he run the Compatibility app to make certain his pc is up to snuff?
If you're happy and you know it......it's your meds.

It should run windows 7, it is a core 2 duo. But for the mouse and keyboard do what Steve said, make sure the legacy USB is enabled. This computer doesn't have PS/2 ports only USB.

I can't get into the BIOS since the keyboard won't work. The mouse and keyboard are USB and I have tried several different ones but none of them work. I will have my friend bring his mouse and keyboard to try but he lives several miles away. No we did not run the compatibility app.

It would most likely be the motherboard, since the USB ports are controlled by the chipset.
If your friend's kb/mouse don't work, you could try popping out the cmos battery to reset the bios settings.

Does the mobo have the green and purple PS2 connectors? Of so, ask your friend if that is what he is using.

I must be living right because when I came home from the hardware store I tried to boot it up and it is now working. There was a message on the screen that Microsoft had updated the OS for the last time.
