How to view TV cabe (Set Top Box) on Laptop

    SYS INFORMATION
    OS Name Microsoft Windows 8
    Version 6.2.9200 Build 9200
    System Manufacturer Hewlett-Packard
System Model HP ENVY TS 17 Notebook PC
    System Type x64-based PC
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4700MQ CPU @ 2.40GHz, 2401 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB
Hyper-V - VM Monitor Mode Extensions Yes

    Actually a two part question
How do I set up my laptop so I can both view my Verizon set top box on my laptop and also if I want to record programs from the DVR on the set top box to burn to a DVD using a program on my laptop.
Verizon STB Motorola HD DVR QIP7216
DVD Burn Program installed on laptop: Cyberlink Media Suite

I guess my first step would be to enable my laptop to view the set top box. I plugged in the HDMI to the STB from the output to the HDMI on my laptop but my laptop does not recognize it. Do I need a special program for this or is there a setting in Win that I need to change.

    Thanks for any help

The HDMI on the laptop is output not input so that's most likely why the laptop is not seeing the top box.

I see. I understand. I took out the HDMI and plugged in a Cat5. My network shows it as "Unidentified" Limited. Is this going in the right direction. Is there a way to configure the network to see the STB.

Just thought, my Easy VHS to DVD, by Roxio, hardware hooks up through a USB port, could handle that.

Thanks for all of the replies and advise. I have a lot to read, research and figure out costs which way I need to go with this. I guess it was not as easy as just hooking up a wire; oh wait, that was stupid for me to think that.

No such thing as a stupid question or thinking. You just need a different cable, and other parts.

    question2012--
"Smart" TV's have a built in App called Web Browser. I do not know if other TV's have this. Once set up--no big deal--my experience is that the download speeds are excruciating slow and rule out the use of the Smart Web Browser for most uses.
