Download with BBC iPlayer

Hi there,

This is not the first time. The BBC / iPlayer web site gives the option to download whatever and have it for up to 30 days. whenever I try, I download as an *.wmv file and on play-back, the attachment is what I get. It is the same with VLC, WMP, Media Player Classic, PotPlayer. Can't beleive it is a codec issue as both VLC and PotPlayer were updated very recently.

Any suggestions gratefully taken on board,

MPEG-4 part 2 (FFmpeg and XviD) seems to be the missing part.
Seeing as Handbrake with VLC installed can convert it.

This is going to make me look pretty stupid. MPEG-4 part 2 is missing? What is Handbrake? And what is the Handbrake with VLC? Thanks for the reply but don't understand at all.

HandBrake is a tool for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codec.

Found you had to have vlc installed before Handbrake would convert iPlayer video though.

And after a bunch of googling it seems the codec I listed above is missing all but Handbrake.

Thanks. However, the iPlayer has two options; to save in iPlayer format so that it will play on an installed iPlayer or to save as a wmv for playing on something else.

I don't have iPlayer so saved it as a *.wmv. Should I still need Handbrake? What is the difference between Handbrake and any other video converter? I currently use Freemake Video Converter and it does all that I need?

Well if it is being saved as a *.wmv, I have no idea what is wrong.

Handbrake I have seen recommended over the years, but I have never used it.

I have not found the answer but here is what I have found.

It is all to do with Digital Rights Management. Apparently, Firefox soes not download the DRM certificate, so an iPlayer *.wmv will not play. But apparently, if downloaded in FF using IE Tab, it should be fine. I installed IE Tab, but trying to download and the tab crashes after about 3 seconds! I have also downloaded from IE, but the only advance I gets is when trying to play on WMP, I get a message telling me that I do not have a DRM certificate.

I will keep looking and if I find a solution, will post it.

Some progress. Under WMP/Library/Options, there is a check box to download DRM certificate with the file.

This certainly allows the*.wmv file to play under WMP but it does not play with anything else (VLC / PotPlayer)
