YES done malaware scan, did a full scan with super anti spyware, but about 10 mins into the scan the comp shut down
somehow the scan had triggered a blue screen.
Ive got avast installed which does a full scan once per week

Thanks, but I dont want to disable thumbs, I want to see them,
but somehow the 3 gig ram Ive got cant handle the job
Ive got the defrag running now, its been going for 30 mins but still only at 3 % progress ..... so this may take a while
maybe this frag will perk up my ...slow... computor .

See if you have a scheduled task set up in task scheduler that shuts you down or restarts you at that time of day. The following link explains how to check. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308569
For the slow problem:
Be sure your swap file is enabled and your drive is not getting too full
