doysl: You know what, as I was driving away from the house I got to thinking about being able to fake my browser and it occurred to me that if I could do this and get on the Augusta Chronicle site--then the hackers could do the very same thing--fake their browser! Also, what is to stop them from using IE when they find they can no longer access the site with FF--that would be the easiest of all to do. How would the Augusta Chronicle be able to stop everyone who uses IE and FF through Hughes Net from accessing their site? They would be loosing a lot of people because almost everyone where I live can only use Hughes Net as their ISP!
Update: Since I started typing this, Beth Bradley Director of Technology Support called me. While she was on the phone she had me to go back to the site--and it worked!! Now I don't have to fake my browser any more, I can access it with my FF. We talked a while about what the hackers can do to get to the site, such as faking their browser or using IE, and she said that she knew that & that they will resort to something new when FF won't get on the site. She said it was like a game of chest, they did one thing to stop them, then the hackers did something else--she said it was never ending, that they were very creative. She also told me that the next time anything like this happened to call the newspaper--I told her that was the first thing that I did!! She was puzzled why I did not get sent to the appropriate people when I called. She said that they had made all of the news room aware of this problem and that they would be answering to the customers if they called in to complain, but that evidently this had not trickled down to the operators that take calls. Hopefully from now on others with this same complaint will now get immediate help when they call the newspaper. So now we can close this thread and mark it as resolved!!
Thanks everyone for all your suggestions and help, and especially to our Russian friend, Slava, who put me on the right track in tracking the right person to talk to.
