I uninstalled AGV and rebooted beofre I installed MSE and got a blank screen. I get the same thing when I installed MSE. Do you mean I should try and uninstall MSE and reboot again ?

I am beginning to think the reason I am getting a blank screen is because my NVIDE graphics don't work at normal operational speed and I need another graphics driver that does. This was why I asked if anyone has any idea or is using a NVIDE graphics driver without having to enhance the operational speed or something similar for it to work. What do you think ?

The "speed" allocates a little more ram to the video card which in turn would give better video performance.

No, not if you've already booted without any anti-virus software installed and still see the same problem . . . which of course means the problem must not lie with the anti-virus software.

Do you see the same blank-screen problem if you boot from a *nix Live CD, (like Knoppix)? If so, the problem is not Windows.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS back to factory defaults?

If that is the case, then I assume it is not due to the type of Graphics video driver I am using ? Still does not explain why with this, it works and with a lesser ram, it does not.

I have not done a boot with a "nix" Live CD as I have not heard of it before now nor how to reset the BIOS to factory setting. But I have never updgrade or update my BIOS before.

If I reboot with a "nix" CD, would this mess up my current setting, etc ?

No, it runs entirely from the CD.

I was doing some reading on this just now before I was interrupted. But from what I've read so far, this is on a entirely different systems from Windows, isn't it ? I'll try to work on this and see. Thanks.

In the meantime, I wondered if Kraxo, who posted here earlier and have the same problem as I have, managed to get round to do a full rescue on his system and what is the result. Would be interesting to know if this resolve the problem - if this problem is not caused by AVG.

Further, are we the only 2 who have this problem so far ? Anyone else ?

Yes, and that's exactly the point. If the laptop exhibits the same blank screen problem while running a different operating system, then you'll know that it's NOT Windows, (or any other program running on Windows), that's causing the problem.

BTW, it's real easy to do. Simply boot your system from the Knoppix CD/DVD and that's it, your running the Knoppix Operating System. It has all the normal stuff such as internet browsers, editors, spreadsheet, word processor, file manager, system utilities, etc., etc., etc. Then when you're done fiddling around, remove the Knoppix CD/DVD and reboot from the hard drive (Windows).

Thanks for the background on Knoppix. Very interesting !

I tried to download the DVD version (can't find the CD version to download) from this Sopedia site

    http://linux.softpedia.com/progDownl...nload-885.html

But it seem the download is over 3GB and will take nearly 2 hours to download. Besides, how is this going to fit into one bootable DVD ?

    A standard DVD holds 4.7GB.

There are many other sizes and versions of Linux:

Oops !! What was I thinking ?? I'll chalk it down to the fact that I was tired when I made that post ! I've download a smaller version which will fit a CD. I'll burn it to a CD and run it and let you know later. Thanks.

I ran Knoppix CD this morning and it worked when my laptop switch is set to STINMIA (I assume this setting is the Standard setting (??) . On this setting, it didin't work on Windows before). But Knoppix don't seem to work if my laptop setting is set to SPEED (it works on Windows on this setting). Knoppix stopped at PCMCIA found, starting cardmgr after it performed CPU frequency scaling enabled for CPU#01

So not sure what all this boils down to. If based on my "assumed" Standard setting and it runs ok, then does this mean something is wrong with Windows ?

By the way, is Knoppix only in German or I was unlucky enough to download a German edition ? But at bootup, it was in English. But once it gets to the Desktop, everything is in German ! I was using Knoppix v5.1.1 If there is a English version to download, how do I find out that version is in English ? Thanks.

I managed to find a English version. So ignore this bit. Thanks

Stamina = Endurance, Speed = Swift.

Your laptop has a standard Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (for STAMINA mode) as well as a NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS notebook GPU (for SPEED mode)

Knoppix recognizes the Intel X3100 and Windows the GeForce 8400M.

Since Sony probably had both modes working in Windows, then yes, it sounds like Windows is broken . . . unless there is some hardware problem causing the issue.

If it was my laptop, I would try a Windows System Restore first. If that failed, I would restore my own System (image) backup. If that also failed, I would then reinstall the factory restore. If it still wasn't working, it would point to a hardware issue.

As I guess you found out, if a Knoppix .iso filename ends in _DE.iso it's German, and if ends in _EN.iso, it's English.

I've done the Windows Restore point part at the early stage when this problem started and it didn't work.

I've never done a System (image) backup restore before, so I guess this is a good time to find out if the ones I made (using Macirum, Arconis, as well as Easues - yap, 3 different programs) will work !! It'll also be interesting to know which will work even though at that time when I made these images, I did verified that they are ok. All I need now is time and energy. Will post back when I get round to doing it. Thanks for all the help.
