Cloud computing and data analytics
Is this area of Virtual Dr. still open for discussions?
I have an odd question(s), possibly out-of-bounds even for here.
Am I the only one who does not understand the current interest (fury, excitement) in “cloud computing” and “data analytics.” I used to know what IBM did for a living -–sell data processing hardware and software and services to government, schools, medical facilities, and commercial firms. Where does IBM draw its revenue from now? What exactly does it sell? Why is IBM (and other companies) so intent on pushing “cloud computing” and “data analytics”? Where exactly are future revenues projected to come from, for doing what?
Can someone explain (or point me to a simple, non-buzz word explanation of) the “cloud computing” and “data analytics” phenomena and why there is all this excitement about them?

These should be a good start:

Thanks Doc. Those three pieces were a good start. I'll keep at it. There certainly is no shortage of things to read. Most though are too deep. I'd welcome suggestions from anyone who finds a reference that seems to get the right balance. ...wdc

You're welcome.
Define "too deep" and "right balance"?
