This new system has come installed with McAfee Security Center ver 10.5.216...
I'd like to use a McAfee Removal Tool, if it exists, to eliminate it in favor of downloading/installing Avast free version.
Can someone please help...and any further protection needed in addition to Avast?
Thanks,
sbuxman

The tool is here http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331
There are some other things you could consider. WOT for your browser(s), free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for manual scans, free WinPatrol for watching systems changes and so forth. These are all optional but useful...

NEW SYSTEM (cont'd.)
RE: McAfee Removal Tool
I'm concerned with the following caution on the McAfee page re removal of the McAfee Security Center:
"You can run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe) to remove all 2005 - 2011 versions of McAfee consumer products. This tool will not run on Windows 98 or ME.
IMPORTANT: You must first uninstall your McAfee products using the Windows Add/Remove Programs (Windows XP) or Programs and Features Windows Vista and Windows 7) before you run MCPR. Failure to do so can result in the number of your licenses being incorrectly counted.
If you cannot successfully uninstall using Windows Add/Remove Programs, or have already run MCPR without uninstalling, you can access your McAfee account and deactivate the licens for your computer to ensure that the license is released for a later installation. Perform the following steps to deactivate a license from your current McAfee subscription and release the license for use with a different computer"
I've been advised to never uninstall an AV program through the control panel uninstall feature. Should I just run the tool anyway and ignore the caution?
Thanks.

Who told you not to do that? I uninstalled McAfee from my laptop that way, then immediately installed Microsoft Security Essentials ( free anitivirus, anti-m a l w a r e/spyware software) and it's free from Microsoft download and works better than Avast as it has never let a virus through to my computer or laptop. Did I mention it was free.
Also, this one doesn't bug you to upgrade, like Avast does.

Removal Tool Link
I went to the link provided for the removal of McAfee Security Center...there is no downloadable link to any removal tool...a discussion of it, yes, but no link to actually download it

I just uninstalled McAfee Security Center (and then ran McAfee's removal tool) per Photolady with great results on my new DELL system -- so I could install Microsoft Essentials. Thank you.
